starting a list of house hold chemicals used to homebrew developers..

So here's my list so far

arm and hammer washing soda heated until it stops loosing weight= anhydrous sodium carbonate

rooto crystal drain cleaner from ace hardware (only place)= NaOH sodium hydroxide

Acetaminophen = paracetamol for homebrew rodinal

pic roach killer = boric acid

20 mule = borax

vitamin C power = ascorbic acid

borax + Drain cleaner = sodium metaborate

ph increaser from pool supply = could be sodium thiosulfate, potassium hydroxide (KOH) or sodium sulfite

from these ingredients you can make

rodinal:

tf-2 fixer:

get some metol and you can make d76h, mytol (xtol equivalent)

keep the list going

Brands listed above is for USA only... But probably available in other countries in the same sections of use

There's hyrdoquinone skin cream - but you would have to seperate the HQ from the ointment, and it's only 2% or so.

I wonder if you can start with quinine water...

Obvious ones:

Coffee - cafenol developers
Tea - toning
Oak galls from the back yard - Pyro
Old brown bananas and apples - Catechol
Sulfuric acid from the car battery - dichromate bleach
Hydrochloric acid for cleaning brickwork - shows up here and there in formulae, not often
Potassium Permanganate - drugstore item, use for bleach for reversal processing
Vinegar - stop bath
Pickling Salt - Microdol-X
Propylene glycol - feed store item, store developing agents as solution
S. Bicarb - mix with citric or ascorbic acid for S. Citrate or S. Ascorbate
Citric acid - canning supply aisle, mix with above
Calgon - well, it used to be S. Hexametaphosphate, but it's something else now, Hexametaphosphate is often called Calgon.
P. Iodide - drugstore item, fixer tester, Crawley xx developer

I would be surprised if sodium thiosulfate or sodium sulfite were sold as pH increasers for pools. They are good at neutralizing chlorine and generally you want to control that separately.

All the "pH plus" type products I've seen are some kind of technical-grade sodium carbonate.

Your right thiosulfate is a chlorine reducer but I know sulfite is sold as a ph augmenter

Sulfite is also a chlorine reducer. It reacts rapidly with chlorine and reduces it to chloride.

Just some thoughts on these lists.

Quinine is not related even remotely to HQ.

Current Calgon is not recommended for use as a water softener in developers.

If you overheat Bicarb, it can give off CO2 gas and become Sodium Hydroxide or Sodium Oxide. Very not good so watch the temp.

Acetone, for some developers. FYI, hydroquinone is also in hair coloring -- at least, in men's hair color. Don't ask me how I know; those days are long behind me now. Better to just be natural.

Tri Sodium Phosphate - sold for cleaning walls before painting, esp. kitchens - the only thing that can clean that sticky gunk around the stove

it's cheaper because you don't have to pay for shipping.. also i dunno how many times i've gone to mix something and i'm like "crap i'm out of 'x'" so now i have to wait a week for delivery...

ALSO... So i just got off the phone with my distributer to my pharmacy...

You can get pure boric acid crystals AND pure propylene glycol by asking your pharmacist to order it and it comes next business day... (no shipping paid)

I have made PaRodinal,Mytol and the ascorbate acutance developer DS-2.You may find that a roll of Hydrion pH paper from ebay is useful.
