Staining print developer?

Has anyone ever tried developing a print in a staining developer? Particularly one such as pyrocat-HD, with the brownish stain. I'm wondering if it may give an interesting, almosed toned look to the print. Obviously, base fog may be an issue, but modificAtions to the formula may help with this.

Dig around here on APUG for a formula for PPPD (Pyro Plus Print Developer, I think).

Yes, but I usually process normally then bleach and Re-develop. Mainly using Ilford IT-8 a Dichromate bleach and Pyrocatechin toner/developer, but I have redeveloped with Pyrocat HD as well.

There are a number of print developers which use Pyrocatechin, they give an Olive brown tone, but they have very short tray life and will stain the highlights as they go off, so that's why bleach and re0dvelop is far better.

aren't most pyrocat/ pyrogallol print developers rather high in sulfite (i think pppd is), which would prevent staining?

Not those designed to give warm tones by staining.

PPD doesn't give the same stain/colour as a plain Pyrocatechin developer

Left is untoned, right toned with IT-8, it gives some intensification due to the Dichromate bleach, but you can use a Ferricyanide/Bromude bleach although the colour shift is less.
