My wife and I decided to run away for the day and figured a return to Raven Cliff was in order. Trip out was fine, we had everything under control. First breakfast. We hit the drive through at the Mrs Winners to get a biscuit to go and sat ignored at the speaker. No problem- they don't want my business I don't need them. Dunkin Donuts took care of us with some fine toasted bagels with sausage and egg. Finally made it to the parking area for the trailhead and find the bathrooms had been closed. No good! What are we paying the government for if not things like keeping the bathrooms open on state lands? We jogged back to nearby Duke Creek Falls and find that park closed altogether for construction. Argh! So we had to backtrack and go into Helen to find a bathroom. We got to a Wendys restaurant about noon where the line at the register was backed up to the door. We traded spots in line to hit the can and got a small lunch to go. Find they didn't give us the right sandwich, our advantage- this thing was twice the size of what we ordered.
We finally got back to the trailhead and got on with the hike. We took a nice slow pace and shot a few here and there. Finally got to the area I wanted and set up my shot. Grafmatic in, took one frame, advanced, another shot with back rotated, this time the grafmatic jams tight and refuses to shut. In my efforts to close it and getting more pissed I manage to crush the septum, break the handle on the darkslide and ruin the film. Much cussing and anguish! Grrr. At least I have a few more holders loaded so I set up another and took a few more frames. Even got a few more on the way out in another area. At least the trip was not a total waste.
Sure is annoying when someone or something just won't do the job they were there for and screws up your plans and expectations. Being flexible is the only sure way to stay sane.

I feel your pain. Today I shot an entire roll of 220 on my Bronica ETRsi with the dark slide still in. I thought the camera wouldn't fire with the dark slide still in? At least that's the way it works with my 120 film back.

Oh well, made the best of it by trashing the film but saving the spool as a spare!

George, I don't have a 220 back for my Bronica SQ-A, but I have had a similar experience in that I shot a few frames on one of my 120 backs and then realized that the dark slide was still in! It wasn't too bad - although the light was fading fast, I could pull out the dark slide and re-shoot those frames.

Hey Gary -- how far is Raven Cliff from the greater Atlanta area? I live in Tucker. Just moved to GA from SC last August.

Now I do not feel so dumb. The first roll I shot with my C330 I had the camera body on "Unlock" and got a blank roll. At least Dwanyes Photo did not charge me for the processing.

It's only about an hour or so up 400 and past Dahlonega and Cleveland. Just west of Helen.

We're heading out to Fall Creek Falls this weekend for some camping. Any Apuggers wandering loose in that area?

WIsh i could join you Gary. It's been a while since we had a chance to get out. Unfortunately, I get to paint my wife's office this weekend. Let's try to plan something in a few weeks out, and see if there are others we can meet up. I realy don't care where we go, just want to shoot.

Well we got back a day early, came home to torrential rains. Maybe shoulda stayed another day but the campground at Fall Creek Falls was awful. Sites are tiny and the whole area is crowded. I did find some good shots so all was not lost. Only problem about posting what I got is my computer is declaring the scanner driver is invalid data for some reason and I can't convince it otherwise, and this is using the latest driver from the Epson site. Never seen anything like it and can't find any solutions online with Epson or Microsoft.
Anyway we need to start looking at another Apug gathering around here, seems we have a few new folks around here and they are trying to hide. Can't let that go, can we?

How about we have some ideas dropped about what you folks like to shoot, or what you would like to try, areas you may have noticed or places you've shot before that hasn't been discussed or shot to death. Once we get some ideas rolling we can try to work up something interesting to get together for.
FWIW I have some space in the basement with studio lights set up. I've had groups over from the Southeastern Photographic Society for portrait shoots. If you know some willing victims we could have an APUG studio shoot here.
Also a few historical sites around for playtime.

I have only lived in GA since last August, so most things here are new to me. I did pick up some Ilford SFX200 and the appropriate filter a couple of months ago and haven't had a chance to play with that yet. That might be interesting. I am leaving for a conference that will have me in MN through Sunday, but perhaps in coming weeks...and except for night shooting, it's pretty much weekends only for me since I typically work Monday thru Friday 8a-5?p.

Hey Monty, know of any good places to shoot in your area? I'd like to find some old architecture to play with where you are free to roam and dawdle as needed.

Seems like with a little planning, we can put something together in a few weeks time. Something around mid to late August? I should be available any of those weekends that far out. Anyone else have preferences?

Gary - I may want to take you up on your previous offer of shooting the 8x10. I enjoyed playing around with it, and am taking a hard look at LF.

I Can Go!

Hi All,
I'm a new APUGger and just found this thread. I'm in Athens and am getting back into traditional photography after experimenting with "that new thing". I'm trying to learn platinum/paladium and my "new" Horseman LE wants work. I'm available most of the time, weekdays or weekends. Let's plan on something.

Sorry guys i have been travelling the past few weeks.

Gary,

I don't have any old architecture places on the top of my head here in Asheville but that doesn't mean I can't do some research which I will. There is a great old set of industrial buildings in various states of disrepair on Hwy 25 just outside of Greenville, SC (Asheville side of Hwy 25) that are begging to be shot but there is ample razor wire surrounding the compound so its going to take access. I've been wanting to look into getting in. Next time I fly out of that airport I will try to work some time in to stop and see if I can't get a name to hound. I am fairly free from now until Sept 23rd with a few notable exceptions (the weekends of August 18,19 and 24 25 are out). I am off from work though until Sept 23rd so weekdays work for me with the slightest bit of forewarning so that I don't spring both kids on my wife). If ya'll have suggestions I'll try to make it. Its always fun to meet fellow ape huggers. I'll even break out the 20 x 24 and weight belt for the occasion.

2Bugles if you get up to Asheville let me know and we can do some Pt/Pd here as that and wet plate are all I shoot. Your more than welcome to stop by one day and get your hands dirty--in the case of wet plate that is a literal fact--those silver stains stick around for a while

Hope it works out to cross paths,

Monty

Hey All,
Yes, Gary I have found some though right now I'm in the middle of film speed testing, development time testing and trying to put together a platinum/palladium processing kit. Monty, I have visited Asheville many, many times and look forward to it every time. I'm really interested in platinum/palladium so it is likely that I'll visit sometime to see how it's done.
