What is the Spur Acurol formula ? Is there any research , website or patent out there ? Google did not return anything .

Since formulas cannot be patented they are closely guarded trade secrets.

According to US patent law the only thing that you can patent would be a new and novel use for a particular chemical. I believe that other countries make a similar distinction. This is to prevent people from making minor changes to a formula and then patenting the changed formula.

Not quite, you can patent the use of a chemical under the conditions given above but not the overall formula. A fine distinction but an important one. For example the secret ingredient often mentioned on APUG used in Kodak Microdol-X. Remember Ilford makes Perceptol which is very similar but lacking the chemical given in Kodak's patent..
