That's not a problem. For difficult surfaces I use my own saliva to dilute the ink (like spot tone..) Why saliva ? because it is more "sticky" and adheres more to the surface of a paper like 542II.
As for the colour itself, unless it is a very big area, you should easily find a combination of grey ink with brown/selenium ink which should match your colour. The eye is very reactive to a white spot in a dark zone but even if you filled the white spot with grey instead of sepia, the eye would be much less attracted and many viewers wouldl not even notice.
Of course, no need to mention that you should test on a similar bit of paper..
