Split filter printing with Bob Carnie

Last evening an enthusiastic group of the Toronto Analogue Film Photographers attended an analogue print making demonstration, organized by Rob Skeoch, with master printer Bob Carnie in his studio at 1840 Danforth Ave. Bob is an internationally renowned printer and local treasure, who was recently selected by the Art Gallery of Ontario to print Vivian Maier's original negatives for their exhibition. This guy is da bomb! He generously shared stories of his experiences, described/explained various print types, and demonstrated split filter printing in his darkroom, using an 8x10 negative shot by Rob Skeoch of the ancient cedars on the Niagara escarpment. It was a great night and the highlight was the print made by a novice printer of Rob's neg while following Bob's instructions. Altogether very inspiring.

Wow!
Would love to learn about any other seminars that may come up. I'm just up the road in Kingston, and it would definitely be worth the drive down. I know Rob used to run a website and view camera workshops...does he still post info on seminars?

Rob's doing well. He now has a masters degree in photography and is currently a Sony photographic rep.

Hey Thanks Frank I appreciate the plug, I really like these types of meetings, Rob S pulled this one together, he has one more booked with 30 people signed and 30 people on a waiting list for another , after the three workshops we are going to gleen the most interested and do a second one where we make negatives and produce gum over palladium, I need to hire him .
This one unfortunately or fortunately depending on what camp you sit on here at APUG is about making silver gelatin prints from digital capture, Rob works with Sony and apparently there are 800 members
totally interested in wet photography... Sean , Council , Moderators (HELLO ANY ONE OUT THERE) there is new blood out there waiting to make wet prints, they just happen to use different equipment to get there.

One Correction, the Vivian Maier show was held at Stephen Bulger Gallery.

I too really liked the fact that the young lady was so enthusiastic to make the print and I am really gob smacked that she followed the path I laid out in the print sequence as it was split filter , dodging and burning
and she indeed got it right. I can tell you that I doubt this young woman has ever considered silver gelatin before making her first print, I hope it inspired her to make thousands more.

Mike Robinson - a current leader in Dags, is now working on a PHD in photography. I would like to meet those teachers that can be able to grant such a degree.

My first question would be * what two colours when combined make blue* they have 10 seconds to answer.

I'm positive that she's totally hooked, especially with being able to keep the print she made! Thanks again for your dedication and inspiration.

Congratulations, Bob! (and kudos to Rob for bringing this together... Hi Rob!) As always, I am blown away by your skill, knowledge and passion for printing. (and by the fact that even with the decades of experience you have, you are still an active student of the art/craft) I would love to participate in any hands-on workshop you do. Hopefully, some day....

Nice to see your digs, Bob. But per the question, all colors put together make blue, at least if you have the kind of color vision a particular co-worker
here has. Built-in pre-panchromatic. Somebody screwed up a five gallon bucket of paint and it turned out loud orange. He was asking around if any
free off-white paint was laying around. So we gave him the bucket and he started painting the inside of the house. Then his wife got home. You can
imagine what kind of hell broke loose. But it looked like white to him, and he couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. After all, the whole
world is blue isn't it?

Actually, being stone color blind, it is all varying shades of grey. I think that I pre dated the 50 shades book

How does that translate into Zones? Can you alter it by development time? I once totally screw up the color balance of a Cibachrome print and tossed
it in the trashcan; but it wasn't dented or wrinkled yet. And older fellow was determined to start "collecting art" so came for a visit and look at some
portfolios and couldn't find anything he wanted. Then he spotted the print in the trash and started raving about it, and pulled out his checkbook. I
subsequently mounted and matted it for him. I later found out he was colorblind.
