Was simply wondering if the concept of split filtering would work with contact printing paper negatives made from a home made pinhole camera that takes an 8x10 negative. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

hi aaronmichael

as long as you are using vc paper, and you can put the light through your filter
you shouldn't have any trouble split filtering your paper negatives.
in a film photography forecast interview with a fellow appuger david william white
i learned a trick that i had never thought of before ... i removed my lens from the enlarger
and just project the light straight down. i have a vc filter holder i can slide over and it works perfectly !

good luck !

Thanks for the reply John. I'll definitely have to try it out when I have some free time. What's the advantage of taking the lens off of the enlarger?

Lot's of light of course can be the disadvantage if you also need time to dodge and burn.

Ralph.
How is he going to split grade print if he doesn't use VC paper?
I use Kentmere FB VC Fineprint for enlarging 8x10 and contact printing 7x17.

hi john

i was under the impression the OP was using a normal vc paper, and contact printing.
if he isn't all bets are off ...

holmburgers

you can also buy bottled gaslight / azo-esque emulsions and coat your own paper
the formulary sells it i believe ...

Yeah, I'm using VC paper when doing my contact printing (I'm not such a newbie that I'd be trying to use graded paper with split filtering - haha). I tried it out yesterday while I had some spare time in the darkroom and it seemed to turn out okay. However, I didn't do a print with a single grade filter, so I don't have anything to compare the split filtered print with.

Very cool, thanks for the heads up. I'd love to try some of these papers someday. After I get an 8x10"...

FYI, I've been doing my 35mm and 120(6x7) contact sheets with LODIMA(in MAS Amidol), it looks SOOOOOOOOOOO much better than anything else I've ever used. I'm finding it hard to NOT shoot the whole roll all together at once so to make a contact sheet to frame . Even little 6x7cm contact prints have this "glow" about them that I can't duplicate(no matter what I do) with ANY other paper. Just amazing IMO. Well worth the $1.50/sheet :whistling:!

cheers
