My Nikon Speedlight SB-28 stopped working correctly some time ago. It started whining, my F100 would give me ERR and the flash seems to smell bad. My guess is that the capacitors have gone bad.

Now then, should I service this or just replace? We have a Nikon service here in Finland but just to have it examined and to have some estimate on the costs costs over 40 €!

If I were to replace, what would you suggest as a good replacement? Another SB-28 from 'bay? I use it with F100.

I do not know what currency your 40 is but if that's equivalent to $40 USD then the price is pretty good. If the caps leaked just toss it and get another one.

Yes, 40 € (EUR) is about $40 USD these days. However, that's not for servicing it -- that's just for them to look at it and to tell me how much it would cost to service it (if it is possible). If I then decide to service it, they won't charge that 40 €. However, it'll cost at least 80 € to service it, quite possibly more.

Worst case scenario I have to pay 40 € just to hear they can't repair it. Or that it'll cost arm and leg to service it.

Minimum € 120. Not worth it. Used functional sb28 or sb28x should be available for less.
