For sale is a Zeiss Ikon "Mess" Ikonta 524/16 with uncoupled rangefinder, Novar f4.5/75mm lens and Prontor-SV shutter. This model has mechanical double-exposure protection.
The good news: this unit was fully CLA'd 3 months ago by Cento6 (Jurgen) and the shutter is dead-on accurate. Here are average speeds I measured across 10 exposures, with a max 5% deviation:
1: 996492 (1s)
1/2: 592464 (1/2)
1/5: 230412 (1/4)
1/10: 90721 (1/11)
1/25: 39005 (1/26)
1/50: 24929 (1/40)
1/100: 11925 (1/84)
1/300: 4600 (1/217) [okay, but you show me a leaf shutter of this vintage that reaches 1/300!]
In addition the lens is as sharp as one can reasonably expect from a Novar, glass is clear, no haze fungus or dust. Bellows is light-tight, folding mechanism is smooth, all dials turn freely, rangefinder works and has been properly calibrated. In short he did a really spectacular job on the CLA given what he had to work with, and Jurgen stands behind his work.
The bad news: this little guy
is UGLY. Hide-from-your-momma, lie-about-how-you-met ugly has a very unique look. In particular most of the leatherette around the outer folding panel cover has rubbed off and underlying metal has rusted. There are a few spots of rust on the inner surface of the folding panel, as well as multiple spots where black paint has flaked off, and the leatherette on the back panel is rubbed down to almost nothing in a few spots.
In other words, he's absolutely gorgeous.
This was a thrift store find a few months ago when I was just beginning to learn about German folders. It breaks my heart a bit to sell, but around the same time I also bought a Nettar that's in slightly better aesthetic condition, so "ugly duckling" here is duplicative and could use a better home. I've only shot about 8-10 rolls on it since the restoration.
I'd ideally like to be reimbursed for what I spent on the CLA, less shipping and so forth, but I understand there are a lot of these on the market and not everyone appreciates the, ah, "distressed" look -- so if you're interested, just make an offer and we can talk.
