Leica released this replica camera in 2000, with only 2000 copies made. It is an almost exact replica of Barnack’s original prototype (of which 26 were made in the early 1923).

The camera has a fixed, collapsible, recomputed 50mm Anastigmat lens, with modern coatings. It is very sharp. I wish it were available in an M-mount.

The camera is rather involved to use, but after a few rolls, one gets the hang of the sequencing of events. It is really like stepping back through time, and 35mm photography at the beginning had none of today’s camera conveniences. But yet, the basic operation (wind film, set exposure, set focus, frame photo and shutter release) are all there.

I have put 12 or so rolls through the camera. It just came back from DAG for a checkup, and zero service was needed. He simply cleaned everything up. I shot a roll through it after I got the camera back, and the negatives (when I did everything right) were sharp and contrasty. It is a tiny engineering marvel.

There are some very small signs of use on the camera body. I wouldn't call this collector grade, but rather near mint user. The lens is perfect. Everything works as it did in 2000 and in 1923.

I love these cameras. And that lens is amazing. I own one of these and use it regularly. The more I use it the better I get with it. It may be a prototype by Leica did it right. I only wish it used the reusable cassettes but it is still a marvel to work with.

Good luck with your sale!
