For shooting with Rollei 35, this case and strap are absolutely necessary for ease in holding camera steady.
 
I just change my grip a bit, which works fine. I do like the case for storage when traveling, though.
 
The strap is nice for carrying the camera around with strap looped around your wrist.
The strap can also act to help to secure your grip tighter on the body.
With strap or without, whatever is most comfortable.

I have used Rollei 35 from first day it appeared on US market. I use it as a pocket camera. Case adds protection against dust as well as protecting from dents and bangs. The strap is attached to camera in just the right place for comfort and security, and provides tension that helps hold camera steady when shooting.
Of course, camera can be carried and used without case and strap, but not with same ease.
Other accessories that make camera a very useful shooter are Rollei 35 filters. Also useful, but adds some protrusion is the Rollei 35 to E39 (Leica) filters. I don’t remember if filter adapter was Rollei of after market.
