Hi everyone,

I’ve done solarization a few times and all came out well, the results were awesome so I’m thinking if this can be done with film?
Around half way of the developing process should I open the reel? How to determine the correct time, for how long should the reel’s lid be open? How to evenly lit the negs?
Probably I’d need as low iso film as possible.

You'll have to try it out. I think it'll be necessary to remove the film from the reel while still in the dark and then hold it up to a light to ensure even fogging. It's up to you to determine the timing, the best developer to use for both 1st and 2nd pass, etc.

You are speaking of pseudo-solarisation.

I do more research and give it a go.

Yes, I just learned that the pseudo/Sabattier and solarisation are not the same. But now that I know this I’m even interested in both.
I think I’ll experiment a bit to see how it goes.

hi laci
bob carnie is an expert in this sort of thing.

is a video of him doing it with prints but if you write to him
and ask maybe he has a video of how to do this with film ?

have fun !
John

Many thanks for your help John!
I really appreciate it! I definitely ask him!

This was one of my professors in college and she does a lot of experimental work in photography. On of the things she taught was solarization of both film and paper. I remember doing it on both, but that was too long ago to remember how to actually do it. If you contact her, she might be able help answer your questions. Plus she has a great experimental book that goes through a lot of process if you are interested in trying out other things as well.

She was the resource that Steve Anchell used for the digital negative section of his Darkroom Cookbook 4th ed. She really does know her stuff.

I think it would be easier to experiment on sheet film, if that's an option for you.

Thank you very much indeed!

Yes it’d be easier but I’m not into large format anymore.
I’m thinking about using an entire roll and cut it into pieces so I’ve more possibility to experiment with the same roll.

I just wish Photo Engineer was still with us to disagree about using "solarization" to refer to the Sabattier effect .
Have fun with your experiments. I look forward to the results.

My impression is that in the USA one more is more indifferent towards this designation issue than over here. But even I do not reject the term in this use once the situation has clearly been stated.
