Social Doc Photography exhibition

Whilst I was at the NGV checking out the $1,000,000 photograph, I also checked a photographic exhibition the gallery is running.

The exhibition is called:- After Image: Social Documentary Photography in the 20th century.

There are 38 photographs from some of the well known and not so well known photographers. Represented are American, Australian, British, European and South African photographers.

Alfred Stieglitz has a couple of original prints which were printed in 1913.

Dorothea Lange has what I think is the best printed picture in the exhibition. It really is beautifully well done. I assume this is because the neg is pretty good as well.

Robert Capa has a few as well. His are perhaps his most famous. The Spanish soldier being shot and falling and the D Day picture of the soldiers swimming to shore.

Really quite interesting to see the actual prints and compare the materials and methods of today with what was available back then.

Bill Brandt also featured and the grittiness in the picture of the coalminer being scrubbed by his wife, has to be seen to be believed.

In short it's a chance to see some fantastic original prints in the flesh.

Once again it's free and at the National Gallery of Victoria.

On until the 1st of April.

Wazza, if you are coming down this way shortly, you may be interested in popping into the Bendigo Art Gallery.

They currently have an exhibition which was put together by the National Portrait Gallery, London.

The exhibition is called, "The World's Most Photographed".

This exhibition includes more than 100 photographs exploring the lives and legends of ten well-known figures from history, including Muhammad Ali, James Dean, Mahatma Gandhi, Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn, Adolf Hitler, John F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Queen Victoria.

I lifted the above paragraph from the gallery website, it's interesting because the paragraph lists 10 people, but reads as though there are more.

The exhibition ends on the 25th of March.

We are heading up to Bendigo on Saturday for a Captain Cook, I'll give a report next week.

One is for sure, this is a pre electronic set of prints.

Admission is $10.00 although the gallery itself, is free.

I feel a business trip to Melbourne coming on prior to April 1. Is the NGV open after hours Mick?

Tony, the gallery can be open sometimes after hours, but one important thing to remember is that the National Gallery of Victoria, is closed on Mondays to save money.

Tony, whilst you are at that exhibition, if you get there that is, the $1,000,000 photograph is on the same floor. About 2 minutes walk away.

Ask for directions as you won't find it that easily.
