A friend of mine -- a VERY good professional photographer, photojournalist and all-around terrific person, despite the fact he's a Nikon shooter  -- moved away, and his last evening in town we decided to get together. He wanted to show me a beautiful little Kodak Signet 35 that his father had given him, and as we were playing with it he reached down and handed me a box and an Igloo cooler, saying "here, these are for you -- I'll never use it, so have fun."

Opening the box, this is what greeted me (forgive the crappy cell phone pictures):

I figured out that the 220 back works perfectly as a 120 back, just flip a little plastic piece upside down and load 120. It counts up to 16 and stops.

And the cooler? Well, here's what was in the cooler:

78 rolls of film, the oldest having expired in December 2016, most current. All kinds of negative film, no transparency but that's fine since I don't shoot that stuff anyway.

The funny thing is that I have never really seen a need in my collection for 645, and now I've got one. My medium format stuff is, with this one exception, old, no-meter stuff, so using this seems incredibly fast for me even with manual focus. And that 120 macro, DANG what a macro! I ran two rolls of film through it already and they're really beautiful.

So off to shoot... and shoot... and shoot...

But before I go, does anyone have any words of wisdom regarding this beastie? I really don't know that much about it, just treat it like any other SLR. It seems pretty idiot-proof but then I can be a real idiot sometimes.

You're right. I am extremely blessed to have good friends and to be surrounded by good people. My wife doesn't mind my dropping a little coin on photo gear sometimes, but more often people find out I collect and use old cameras and they give me things. Both my 4x5 Speed Graphics, my 6x6 Norita 66 system, this 645, a couple of Contaflex SLRs, a couple of Retina Reflex IIIs, and a host of other things like complete darkroom setups have all been given to me. And I give some things away as fast as I get them -- things that are too modern for my tastes, like the Nikon N90 and the Minolta 7XI with the creative cards, and darkroom supplies and gear I have no use for like -- so I guess what comes around, goes around.

In this case I went out to my Jeep and grabbed my portfolio bag and gave him an assortment of matted 11x14 prints I'd made, which is scant compensation for this gear, but he seemed to appreciate it.

It looks like Christmas came way early for you this year!

You're going to have fun with that camera. I used to shoot an Nll. I loved the big viewfinder and the matrix metering. Autofocus wasn't bad either unless you want to shoot sports. I used to like to walk around and shoot people with mine. Quick and accurate.

The 120 macro is real nice. So are the 35mm, 75mm and 150mm lenses.

Very nice indeed. I'm a Pentax guy, and since Pentax is now owned by Ricoh, my Ricohflex is sort of a Pentax!

Enjoy the camera, lenses, and all that film!

Great gift! I like the Pentax 6x7 system, and I lusted after the 645 system's smaller size and ease of use when I was doing aerial work. Enjoy!
