There she sits - the big fat "0" for "0 replies". O.K. I wasn't exactly Mr. Popular reguarding this topic. I was convinced there'd be a deluge of replies -
So you're not going (I, probably won't be either, SH_ _!) Nevertheless, are there ANY Olympic fans here at APUG? What will you watch?

So if they weren't held in Brazil things would improve for their "millions of poor...."?
Political/social acts tied to or taken place at the Olympics NEVER changed anything, nor helped anyone.

I appreciate the individual achievements, but I dislike the nationalism.

It seems to me that in the "true spirit" of the Olympics we should totally disregard nationalities. Why all this focus on how many medals a "country" has "won"? The athlete won the medal, not the country. As we say 'round these parts, "the country didn't do jack".

The only event I really enjoy watching is the bobsled in the winter Olympics.

ObPhotoContent: can you take a "serious-looking" camera and lens to Olympic events? For many professional sports here, anything more sophisticated than a point-n-shoot requires a press pass.

Not really, unless I'll be paid for. But wait: TV & popcorn for sure!

Cheers,

Renato - who took 1200 km of road trip with a bike |CWB-RIO| 3 years back for a meeting with its comrades in Rio - and had fun. A lot.

No.

I would rather be doing photography or offroading or both. In my not so humble opinion I would not want to visit a country while a summer Olympics is in progress.

We had the Winter Olympics here in 2010 and it was a great party. We met so many people from so many places around the world, and everybody seemed to be having a wonderful time.

The Winter Olympics are much smaller than the Summer version, and Canada is, of course, quite strong in the winter sports, so there was lots of opportunity to cheer for the "home" team.

But generally, it was a very fine experience.

And those Dutch speed skating fans are crazy!

Wow, never saw this thread before and looks like lots of deletion. Why so much controversy?

We don't watch TV nor sports, but we do watch the Olympics. Why not, it's nice to see people pushing themselves, and yes, there are political issues, or "rich country" issues, but if you are only going to watch some sports once in a long while, Olympics is better than anything else.

O.K. - there's nationalism, but it's a healthy nationalism. I was at a bar, and I couldn't believe what I saw -
Israeli athletes chugging down beers with athletes from Arab nations - Egypt - Syria - Algeria, laughing,
joking, shootin the breeze. They didn't care who came from where.
This is what the Olympics are really all about.

Half of my family is from Syria - drinking alcohol is absolutely forbidden unless maybe you're dying from no water. Not doubting what you saw, but they shouldn't've been drinking if they were Muslim.

That is good.

That very day - or for the 10-14 days that ensued, they weren't Muslim nor Arab or Jew or Christian - they were athletes - ALL of them.

August in Brazil...with the news of the Zika virus and mosquitoes in Brazil, that has to give pause to lots of folks thinking about travel there. But then you say, "August is NOT summer in Brazil, it is winter."
Some native of Brazil has said that "there are mosquitos here throughout the year, you can get bitten at any time". Especially when you leave Rio to go inland to some more tropical sites of events.

So then you say, "So the women stay home, and let the man go to Brazil for the Olympics." But then CDC says:
  • Zika virus can be spread during sex by a man infected with Zika to his partners.
  • In known cases of sexual transmission, the men had Zika symptoms. From these cases, we know the virus can be spread when the man has symptoms, before symptoms start, and after symptoms end.
  • The virus can stay in semen longer than in blood.
So you wonder why few seem to be going?!

So women should not go, only men and then the men have to give up having sex. Wow that is really a great game plan for any event. ROTFLMAO!!

If I were to travel to Brasil right now, it would be to document the architecture of poverty in the political climate of a coup de tat. The Olympics only adds a surreal twist to the backdrop. However, it is unlikely that I will actually be able to travel to Brasil this year.

Considering that the IOC is all about making money for the committee owners and nothing about amateur sports, there is no way in Hell that I am giving up sex.

And now OP knows why Sirius Glass is not going to Rio for the Olympics.

As for me, I have been to Rio before, and therefore no reason to go back, even for the Olympics. And giving up sex...not for me, either.
