Ok, I've asked some weird questions on APUG before but this one might top them all. No, I'm really not crazy. It's just that my soul has a yearning for snow and as artists, I'm sure you can understand why I must listen! My problem is that, living in SC, chances for snow are few. I don't have the time or the extra funds to travel far. So my question is this: Is there some region with snow that is close enough [to Charlotte, NC] that I could drive over for a quickie, weekend trip? Oh, and I don't want to go ski... I'm looking for a quiet trek thru some snow covered trees.

Have a merry holiday everyone

Well so far this year it has been unusually warm in the eastern half of the US and snow is pretty much non-existent. Even in Michigan's upper peninsula which usually has about a foot on the ground by now is pretty bare. All the snow is out west. (Ask Denver!) Whenever more seasonal temperatures arrive, though you should be able to find some good stuff in the higher elevations around the Blue Ridge Parkway in N.C. IIRC, Mt Mitchell usually gets around 100 inches per season.

As Lopaka says, we're having an exceptionally mild winter so far in the Northeast - still no snow cover in upstate NY etc. We're not likely to have a white Christmas in Copake this year.

Your "snow search" reminds me of a Tucson, AZ phenomenon. On those few occassions in the Winter when it snows on the top of Mt. Lemmon (10,000' elev.) Mexican families drive up from Sonora State on day trips to show their kids what snow is!

I'm sure we are not close enough, but we just got about two feet of the stuff over the last two days! The airport is going to open at noon, it has been closed for about two days.

I'll say...I wish'd we had more snow in these parts (Greenville area) but...it's been years since a really good snow fall...when it does snow in this area, one place that is nice and gets a bunch of snow is Burnsville area just north of Asheville...but like I said, that is when there is snow...where are you located?

Yeah George, I am beginning to forget what the stuff looks like myself!

And bnjlosh, I am just south of Charlotte, NC.

Thanks for the replies everyone - just as I suspected, I'm afraid. To compensate, I bought myself a fuzzy, white sweater at the local REI. I just love that store!

Don't look to us in Eastern Canada, we had green Christmas too. If you want snow, hop a plane for the rockies. I would love to go out to ski but the resorts are booked solid:sad:.

Wow! Who knew such a product existed?!

So today we're informed that the storm that passed through southern Manitoba last night and dumped a #*itload of snow came from...Oklahoma?? WTF?? Global warming anyone?

Let me tell you how tired I am of shoveling the crap:mad:

I second this! I just got home from a New Year's at the lake to 27cm on my driveway.

I was in Toronto the last few days. No snow. January 1 and people are riding motorcycles and running in shorts. Weird. Home in Thunder Bay, the ski areas are really hurting. No snow and too warm to make it. Usually we have a few feet of snow by this time and -30C weather. Sled heads are hurting too.

We have more than we can use here. The school never got to open after Christmas break. I had to walk through deep snow drifts to get home from work. I can't ride my motorcycle and even bicycle can't get through. Streets have been covered with ice. Another storm coming this weekend.

Saturday at sunset. The sun came out for about five minutes after snowing all day. The street seen here was under about a foot. Fuji Provia 120, Mamiya 645 Super, 150mm f5.6 1/125.

Pretty light! Thanks for sharing the photo
