I'm off to Slovenia at the end of July for a week, any suggestions on places to visit and photograph?

The capital Ljubljana has some beautiful architecture such as Baroque, Art Nouveau, castles, etc, so bring a wide angle lens. The outdoor markets and cafes of the city center will keep your camera busy. There's a late afternoon tour along the river that crosses the city (I forgot the name). It's touristy but fun and cheap. This is a university town, so there's a great nightlife not sure in July though. A nice day trip would be a visit to the town of Piran on the Adriatic coast. This place is very small but gorgeous! If you have a car then take the time to enjoy the country side. It's very photogenic.
I stayed at a hostel near the train station in Ljubljana. It's a very cool place. The building was a prison so the rooms are the inmate's rooms\cells.

Here you can find a couple of shots of Slovenia:
Central Europe

And a nice site with good info about Ljubljana:

Have a great time!

Thanks for the suggestions. I received my Lonely Planet book today so time to get researching.

There is hardly a square inch of Slovenia that is not worth photographing! The mountains have some of the most spectacular Alpine scenery in Europe and it resembles in many ways Switzerland of several decades ago. Just walking out of the airport will blow you away and any road you drive on will take you past beautiful vistas and picturesque villages. You can't go wrong anywhere -- your only frustration will be that you're only there for a week!

Dear Peter,

I was there a week or two back, and drove right across the country from east to west (in from Hungary, out into Italy).

Yes, the scenery is stunning almost everywhere. Be wary of 'tourist attractions' such as museums, as few (if any) are a patch on the scenery. For the best parts of all, I'd nominate the Julian Alps. Capodistria (Koper) is somewhere to photograph quick, before they ruin it any further with modernisation (it's already been screwed up a lot compared with my first visit 6 years ago -- and I have Slovenian friends who are even less happy than I am).

It's a surprisingly expensive destination, compared with Hungary next door, and driving standards have fallen a lot since they let the Italians in. But I'm looking forward to my next trip, which will be my fourth. All I have to do is find the time and the money at the same time. Even Lake Bled, a tourist trap among tourist traps, is visually gorgeous: hire a rowing boat...

Cheers,

Roger

Lovely place. The (tiny) coastline has lovely old walled towns. It must be 18 years since I went to Ljubljana, but would recommend it. The limestone caves at Karst are worth a visit, though photography might be difficult.

Have a great time.
