slide vs neg

you know, just when I am getting comfortable that scanning negs works out better than scanning slides I find that every now and then one slide comes along which just pops me out of my chair.

This weekend I was going through 2 rolls of 35mm which I shot side by side in two bodies sharing the same lens. For the most part I feel that many images show that I get more detail out of my negs and certainly better shadow details.

Then I looked at this one




sadly I had a roll of 36 slides but 24 negatives so I can't compare this one with a neg .... but its weird ... it doesn't seem to possess the same 'attributes' that the other exposures on the same roll did.

scanned on LS-4000 from Fuji Sensia ... slight pepper grain apparent in some but not all images (lessened by application of Fine level ICE)

It's probably that the DR of that shot is small enough to get both the highlights and the shadows. It's when the DR is higher that the 'shadows' or 'highlights' become more important.

That's a good example why pyros are fun in BW. The stain naturally compresses the DR to a manageable level. Beautiful for scanning.
