I have been developing E-6 Film for a while, mostly expired film but also some fresh rolls. I have had anything from perfectly clear slides to slight colour casts to strongly tinted slides. Now I was wondering if there is any way to tell if a colour cast originated from development and/or from the film.
I am especially interested in analysing the unexposed parts of the film between shots / at the ends. For example, I just developed two rolls of different film (Ektachrome 100 Plus and 400X) in the same (quite old) developer. Both only have a light colour cast in the images, but one has a slightly blue cast in the unexposed areas and the other a purple colour cast. Does this difference indicate different degrees of expiration of the film, or is it more likely just the difference in emulsion and potentially a bad first developer?
Do all slide films develop to colour-neutral black in the unexposed areas when fresh and developed properly?
