These are the USA (now disused?) and ISO standards.
Note that the USA 50 TPI, 60 degree thread is "same" as ISO 0.5mm pitch
meaning that a thread made to this drawing will engage with a socket made to ISO and vice versa.
I regularly tap the release arms of Thornton Pickard roller blind shutters, I use a choice of 2 metric straight taps (not at hand to give the sizes unfortunately). Both allow a cable relaease to be fitted securely and with a good tight fit.
I just took a cable release to a ghardware store and tried them in metric nuts before buying the same size taps.
Thanks everyone. With the thread and taper information above I'll try to find the correct size die. I want to save my favorite cable release, which fortunately has both a long barrel to cut new threads on, and generous adjustability for length.
