single vs double condenser

I see some enlargers configured with one or two condenser lenses.

I thought I read somewhere a second condenser shortens the height of the enlarger.

What is the difference in light uniformity between a single and double condenser. If spacing and height are not a concern, can a single condenser suffice?

I have no idea, but mine(Fuji FD690 which covers from 35mm to 6x9cm) has three. I heard the reason the 3rd condenser was added to this model was to control and even out the light for use of a 50mm lens. All the previous models in this series (Fuji 690 series) had two condensers...

The combined refractive power of a double condenser
is great. Usual focal lengths of the pair are in the inches.
I wonder though of lens abberations using a single lens
condenser. Although a well corrected achromat as
such is not the objective of a double condenser
the pair may perform better. Dan
