I have a couple 8x10 holders loaded with film with a single, narrow notch. I cant tell if its a V or a U, but I can tell its not very wide. Its narrower than the U notches in FP4, for example. I also know it has to be either Ilford HP5 or FP4, or its old Arista/Ilford equivalents because those are the only films I've ever used! But it doesnt match up to any of those. I know a lot of European fims have a single notch but I've never bought any of them. It pretty much HAS to be Ilford/Arista 400 or 125, no more than 10 years old

J&C used a singe U notch with their re-branded HP5+. I have a boat load of it in 4x5.

I did buy J&C paper once or twice, but I sure dont recall buying film from them. If I had, I would still have the 8x10 box laying around....

Nope, I've looked at all those already but thanks. I'm thinking by the process of elimination it must be Arista/Ilford 400, but I havent found a notch code for that yet and havent found an old box. But there must be one around here somewhere

Edit: Yup, I found it. Its Arista/Ilford 400. A single half circle notch.

Not all notches are codes. Sometimes they are there only to help confirm the emulsion side in the darkroom.

AFAIK all US and Ilford notches are codes. Seems to be the Euro thing to have them only indicate emulsion side. Hence the title of the thread.
