Does anyone know where one can get spare parts for a Sinar Norma? I recently bought one in excellent condition but it has one problem: The cogs on the white plastic gear “thing” that allows you to fine focus with the front standard are worn out and needs to be replaced.

Thanks.

Sinar still sell them as new replacement parts. Contact either the Norwegian Sinar distributor, or go directly to sinar.ch use the contact forms there.

There was a repair technician who lived in the UK, Bill Orford, who was active here on APUG and bought up a lot of spares when Sinar UK shut down their local repairs and service department. I've not seen him active for a while, and his website seems to have gone, so I don't know if he is still active or not. If official channels don't respond, you might try tracking him down.

Many thanks. I did not know that they still made spares.

If Sinar cannot help, there is a fellow in the US
who trades in Sinar Norma cameras and parts
for them. He has a site devoted to literature
on the Norma:

Dead Link Removed

and he may be reached at sinar@king-platypus.com .

I have bought parts from him -- he is reliable and
keeps a good supply of Norma parts.

Hi Claes !
If the leads above do not prove sucessful, these tracks are pretty common in machinery. So if you go to a mechanic shop specializing into machinery repair or tool making, they may be able to supply a replacement for it.
I've bought parts direct from Sinar in Switzerland and the people were friendly and efficient.
Just my 2¢

Praise of Sinar Tech Support.

I received the spare parts today. Sinar shipped them to me for free.

Naturally, I’m both impressed and grateful.

Well, getting the part was fun enough I guess, but actually installing it turned out to be a small adventure. Being an academic in the humanistic sciences I realise that I lack some practical and technical skills – so I turned to a good friend who has a firm understanding of all things mechanical. I turns out that the front standard on a Norma is built around the focusing track and that the whole thing has to be disassembled in order to replace it. It took us a few hours to dismantle the camera, clean and grease the parts and reassembly it.

The whole experience was quite fascinating – but what I found most interesting was that my friend had an facial expression of pure joy the whole time he was working...

Yes, you're right !
This is one reason why these cameras are so prized !
They are _really_ well made ! And mechanically, they are nice, very nice.
When Swiss people want to make excellent product, they can and do it!
