Hi !
I own a 4x5 Norma and recently got the 5x7 conversion back.
My 4x5 back has a Fresnel lens which is inserted into a frame. This frame clips onto the back, on special ground glass retaining clips.
I've seen Sinar 5x7 Fresnel lenses, and they all seem to come without any dressing ;-) Naked as their first day.
Is this normal, and if yes how one mount them onto the back ? I better know before shopping as the price tag is somewhat , well, high ?
Thanks a lot for your help and advice !

Hi Georges

I recently got the advice to contact Sinar tech support (E-mail: tech@sinarcameras.com) on a different Norma matter. They were fast to reply but the person who knows Norma is on Christmas holiday and won’t be back until the beginning of next year. But I do believe that they can help you.

Sinar Fresnel lens for 5x7

Georges,

I recently bought the 5x7 conversion package for Sinar P which in this particular purchase also included a Fresnel lens as well as bellows, frame for rear standard, and ground glass back.

Like yourself, I also anticipated a frame for the Fresnel. However, the bare Fresnel lens sits directly on top of the ground glass (i.e. it becomes the surface against which the loupe is positioned for focusing) and slides into existing clips on the left and the right. It's a bit of a fiddle, not exactly what I would have anticipated from Sinar. But it's tight and works well, so who am I to complain?

I'm not certain if the Norma arrangement would be the same, but knowing the way Sinar equipment is designed I suspect so. Your description does sound familiar. It is very possible that the same Fresnel lens is used for both. Hope this helps.

all the best wishes of the season,

Paul Karas
