Desirable as the the lens was marketed at the time as being fully corrected wide open.
Perhaps Chromatic Aberration can be well corrected when wide open, as a biogon derivative the SA has enough elements groups to have the CA well corrected at large aperture if the designer wanted it, but corners are not optimal when wide open even in the 4x5 format, so situation is even worse for 5x7.
You know, marketting information always tell the nice part of the history
Still, all depends on the shot, many times corners are not important because you have sky in the bottom corners and out of focus close terrain in the bottom corners, or you won't enlarge much, or it does not matter for other reasons...
That shutter is perfect for studio work. In the field it has some drawbacks, an "in shutter" lens would operate with regular bellows and it would provide faster speeds to freeze movement of water or vegetation under wind, still it can be used in the field, also providing an excellent solution for cases of glasses that are only in barrel.
It is wonderful on 4x5 and 5x7
Yeah, quite an industrial beauty, but also a competent top notch setup, the original and unbeated Norma!
Eternally durable, easy to repair (ajust) and the most versatile Sinar model. High precision and simple&fast operation... Geared movements or slightly lighter weight of the following models may suit better specific studio work or save some weight, but nothing as the sound all terrain Norma original design, IMO. Regarding beatuy... the Norma is simplicity made pure beauty.
