Silvergrain Classics is presenting another workshop on 09-10 July in Frankfurt. Please see below for a description of the workshop. Booking can be made at the Eventbrite link here.

Here is the YouTube video promo.

Our Inspiration

It was in 1962, Bailey's second photo shoot for Vogue, this time Shrimpton in New York. Along for the ride was a teddy bear, and instead of photographing landmarks like the Chrysler Tower or the Statue of Liberty, they decided to shoot galleries and pagoda-covered restaurants in a grimy, damp, street photography style — which went down in the history of fashion photography and ushered in the "Swinging Sixties." Inspired by these images, we decided, in collaboration with Leica Galerie Frankfurt, to choose “Mainhatten” as our backdrop for an authentic vintage fashion shoot.

Why Analog Film?

The different film materials have specific properties that give the photographs a distinctive aesthetic due to their physical nature. It can’t be replicated by desaturating a digital shot or adding a vintage filter. For an authentic film look, film is still the first choice.

The Photographer

Marwan El Mozayen is editor-in-chief of SilvergrainClassics, a print magazine about film photography, and has given numerous workshops as director of the SilvergrainStudio in Bad Nauheim. One of his main focuses is authentic vintage photography.

The Workshop

Day 1: The Fashion Shoot (also bookable separately)

Experience a professional fashion shoot up close in the streets of the city of Frankfurt! Marwan El Mozayen will be at your side throughout the day, presenting tips and tricks for everyone, regardless of equipment and skills. By the end of the day, each participant will create unusual and exciting new images to enrich their personal portfolio.

Day 2: Darkroom Printing Your Best Shot (also bookable separately)

After an excited photo shoot, working on your best negative is no less exciting; the photographer gets the opportunity to give the shot an individual touch. All participants can enlarge their best picture classically in our modern darkroom, working with all the best equipment.

Don’t worry if you have never made a darkroom print before! It’s a fascinating experience, and there will be someone from the SilvergrainAcademy team by your side to support you every step of the way.

  • Operation of the enlarger
  • Evaluation of your negatives
  • The contact sheet
  • The development
  • Evaluation of the prints

The Process

Creative fashion photography is teamwork. Each participant will be a part of this team. We will be working with our two talented models throughout the shoot, dressed professionally in a contemporary 60s-influenced style. It will be important to find the "magic moment" from the right combination of scenery, posing, lens, as well as film material that makes a shot unique.

Another Highlight:

No one has to send their negatives away to be developed. The SilvergrainStudioLab team will develop and scan your images right on the spot, while the shoot goes on!

At the end of day one, the images are discussed, workflows and techniques used are summarized.

The entire workshop is conducted with the direct support of:

  • Peggy Sue Frankfurt
  • Negative Supply, innovative solutions for DSLR scanning,
  • Tetenal, the oldest photochemical company in the world,
  • and Kodak Professional Films.

The workshop fee includes:

  • 2 professional photo models
  • Professional makeup artist
  • Films (medium format or 35mm)
  • Film processing and scans
  • Lab equipment, photochemicals, and paper
  • Supervised darkroom printing in the SilvergrainStudioLab

The one in Frankfurt has a nice little library where you can look at photo books if you're stuck downtown on a rainy or hot day. And of course exhibitions. I was treated nicely there even though I have nothing to do with Leica other than occasionally drooling over them.
If someone here is coming to Frankfurt for this, hit me up for coffee/beer/whatever!

They don't bite. I even teased them by bringing my Texas Leica to the meeting that was hosted there last weekend, they didn't keelhaul me or whatsoever 😂
