I managed to regain access to the Silverfast forums recently, and they are marked read-only but I'm only a lowly single-license "peasant." Does anyone know how to get read-write access?

There's a red stripe across the front screen which says 'SilverFast Forums (read-only)' and 'more information'. If you click 'more info' it says this, dated December 2021:

The SilverFast Forum is currently open for reading only. New requests cannot be created.

Please use our new SilverFast Help Center if you have questions about using the software or want to report a problem. We have kept up with the times and created a modern help section for you, which will assist you with your request.

You will find answers to frequently asked questions, the possibility to chat with our staff or send us an e-mail if you can't find a suitable answer to your question.

For the time being, this forum will remain with all entries in read-only mode. It contains some information that is still interesting especially for older devices and SilverFast versions (SilverFast 6.6 and
8)
.

We would like to thank all users who have contributed to this forum over the years.

There's a link in there to take you to the Help Center: like a forum but without ungrateful user comments.

Understood, but WHY? Just about every other software program I use, even "shareware" or free, has a user forum. What's so special or unique about Silverfast? I'm guessing that if the user forum still allowed new posts, that SF could reduce its support requests workload. Plus, we would all be happier.

To the above, I would add that SF seems almost unique in charging $30 for the user manual, and I have not been able to find any third-party user manuals.

It's ridiculous, I'm sure it's just about making money. Do you have a specific question? I can try to help you to the best of my ability, I've learned a lot about SF using it the last few years.

My question may be somewhat rhetorical. Of course it's about making money, but why does SF ignore the industry-wide practice of providing a free user manual for complex software? And not supporting a working user forum? Speaking as someone whose career was in software product management, that is self-defeating at best. I know from my career experience that in small but established companies , the founder sometimes loses touch with the market and evolving industry practices.

To me, and probably to other people, these business practices leave a bad taste in my mouth. And from a competitive viewpoint,, Vuescan provides a free online user manual.

I'm not by my computer to check, but IIRC when you log into that help centre there were downloads of something available there. Later I'll check if that included a manual.

The manuals and documentation for all of the silverfast software is available on this page https://www.silverfast.com/documentation/en.html

You can use the drop down menus on the left to select the particular software for which you need documentation and then choose the document that you need.

Thanks. I've just downloaded all the relevant manuals.
