Just tried to install Silverfast Ai 6 that came with my new Epson v750 on my new Windows7 laptop (what recession?) and it says

"This program can only be installed on versions of Windows designed for the following processor architectures; x86"

So, am I stuffed?

I'm trying to install as Stand-alone/Photoshop plug-in.

Any ideas?

yes, I read that on the Silverfast site;

SilverFast editions with version numbers before 6.6.1r2 aren't specially adjusted to the Windows 7 operating system. Older versions possibly may not run on a Windows 7 machine or may cause some errors. For example, installation and stability problems may occur.

So I guess my version is below 6.6.1r2. It says on the site that Silverfast 6 is compatible with Windows 7 64-bit.

It also says

It's always recommendable to use the latest SilverFast version available. If you already own a SilverFast the update is free or available for a discounted rate.

So again I guess I will be able to update. Having never been able to use Silverfast, I don't know if it's worth paying out for an update.

On the site they are promoting;

Experience the advantages of SilverFast's 64bit HDRi format, that is available for the first EPSON scanners now, for the following models of the Perfection series as yet:

Is anyone using this with Windows7 (with an Epson v750)? And is it worth the cost of upgrading from Silverfast 6?

I don't know about use with Windows 7 per se. But I just started using SilverFast with my V750 under XP, switching from VueScan. The version that came with my hardware was a 6.5 revision, and the update to the latest (6.6.1R4, I think) was free, so your "cost" of upgrading might be $0.

I believe you can just download the latest version of the software and enter your serial number to register it. You can check with SilverFast to see what version your serial # is and how to install. I've found their support to be very helpful.
