I was experimenting today, and making contact prints on expired Kodak Polycontrast III paper (about 10 years out of date) by letting it sit out in the sun for 10 or so minutes. The paper turned dark purple, and looked alright, but when I put the paper in fixer, that dark purple really lightened up. And after I washed it, the highlights turned a orange color, and it's starting to look like it does when the paper isn't fixed.

I was just curious if anyone knew a way how to keep the paper that dark purple color. I read an article about fixing van dyke prints that says you can use a regular print fixer, if you dilute it 1:15, but I'm not sure if that would have the same effect on a RC gelatin paper.

You can use just about any enlarging paper as a print out paper. The paper determines the color of the final print. My experience is that warmer papers tend toward blue or purple while cold papers tend toward peach. Albeit, I haven't done this with a wide range of papers, I have just played around with it. I use sodium thiosulphate, at 10 percent I think, and it caused much less bleach back than paper or film fixer. Overexposed to compensate for the bleaching effect of the fix.

Different papers have different effects. I've noticed most of the time if you don't tone before fixing it'll go straight to a brown ugly tone. Also I've done a test and different lengths of time exposed with change the hue/color of the print after toning. I have one example in my gallery.

rumor has it ( (there was a url link here which no longer exists) ) that
you can mix a 10% potas nitrate solution and soak photo paper into it
2 times ... and it will convert developing out paper into pop paper.

10% KNO3 solution means 10 grams in 100ml of water. So, start with 750ml of water, add 100 grams of KNO3 and add water to make 1l of solution.
