Sigma lens and Canon Rebel 2000 compatible?

I have the opportunity to buy some lenses from a fellow on another forum but wanted to be assured of their compatibility with my camera. They are older Sigma lenses as follows:

90mm 2.8
21-35mm 3.5-4.2

I have a Canon Rebel 2000 that I bought in November of 2003 but was told by a Sigma rep via email that these lenses would be incompatible with this camera. I guess I am hoping beyond hope that they might work despite the words of the Sigma guy simply because they are a group of lenses (there is one other for sale that will work with my body) that I would like to have in my bag!

Do you have any ideas about Canon/Sigma compatibility issues? Your help is much appreciated.

Sigma make/made lenses for a whole range of cameras, Nikon, Canon, Olympus, etc, etc - just the camera mount is different (Sigma also had their own range of SLRs). If they have the Canon EF mount then they should fit - if not, they won't.

It's not a question of the mount, they are Canon EF mount lenses, it is a matter of chip compatibility. There is definitely an issue with these lenses and a dSLR and there has been mention on other boards about issues but it is not 100% clear to me.

If some dSLR has a problem with them, I don't see why that would necessarily mean the Rebel 2000 would. One option is if it is practical to try them before buying. If not, and Sigma say "no good" for whatever the reason, then I would be inclined to take their word for it. Or you could see what Canon have to say.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Rebel 2000 the camera that replaced the Rebel G? I'm trying to remember, but I think it's the same camera with upgraded metering, etc. I have a Rebel G that I have used Sigma lenses on since it was new. No problems at all. I also use the same lenses on an older EOS 10s. If the seller was trying to use the lenses on a digital camera, which I am toally unfamiliar with, there may be some issues with the electronics. I don't see why you would have a problem on your film camera. Very good lenses, by the way.

There was/is a chip compatability problem with some of the older Smegma lenses. Apparently some sort of licensing problem that may or may not have been ironed out.

All lenses working!

I got my shipment of lenses a couple of weeks ago, now and am totally thrilled. My line up is now as follows:

Sigma 21-35mm f3.5-4.2
Canon 50mm f1.8
Sigma 28-80mm macro f3.5-5.6
Sigma 90mm macro f2.8
Canon 75-300 f4-5.6

I also have a Canon 28-90 f4-5.6 that I am now trying to unload to help fund future/past purchases. (ooops, I think I'm supposed to be a subscriber and post that in classifieds. )

Anyway, the thread was about compatibility with my Canon Rebel 2000 and there is no problem. They all work 100%! These aren't L quality lenses but for someone like myself they are a lot of fun and I am absolutely loving the macro capabilities of a couple of them.

Thanks for all the help with this purchase.

because of how much the EOS bodies rely on communication with the lens, and Sigma's (often poor) reverse engineering of the protocols involved, using older Sigma lenses with newer Canon bodies is a crapshoot.

This isn't restricted to Canon bodies, but it's more often a problem with those bodies as they use an entirely electronic mount. Currently, there's major issues with the Nikon D200 and many Sigma lenses (including current ones) if you try and use the AF-ON button.

Thankfully with this thread, one posted to www.fredmiranda.com, a similar one posted to RFF and communication with Sigma it's a crapshoot that I won! That's all I'm concerned about right now... that and shooting.
