When Sony, in 1981, presented the digital photography (then named magnetic photo or still video) with its first Mavica, the technology was not at all ready for an industrial production and seven years were necessary for a slow development. This occured in the research laboratories, not only by the big actors of photographic equipments (Agfa, Canon, Fuji, Kodak, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Polaroid, Tamron), but also by specialists of electronic devices such as Casio or Hitachi, and evidently by Sony too.

Hmm. If I'm not mistaken, in the early 1980s some journalists (not photojournalists) were issued electronic cameras, possibly Mavicas, for taking news photos to be sent back to the home office very quickly. Transmission by telephone. Photos from, say, Tokyo, on the front page of the NY Times the day they were taken, sooner than possible with film. They were awful but good enough to communicate. Another indication that image quality is overrated.

I look forward to corrections if I'm mistaken.

@Sirius Glass will most likely have a different perspective on this, albeit in a slightly different application.

Matt is correct. My experience predates that. I worked on remote sensing with infrared, UV, and color photography on space craft. I worked on the Science Sequencing Team, which programmed the eleven instruments on the Science Platform for Voyager 1 and 2. You have seen my photographs for the Jupiter Closest Approach and my four movies: Jupiter Closest Approach for both space craft showing Jupiter rotating and growing larger as Jupiter's moons orbit and the Red Spot movie, showing the Red Spot spinning.

The Wide Field (Wide Angle) and Narrow Field (Telephoto) instruments were based on CCDs.

So I predate almost every one in Photrio in digital photograph.
