Shutter size for 240mm f/4.5 Xenar.

Well, I got the horse before the cart again wandering through Eb...y I just won a Schneider Xenar 240mm f/4.5 from around 1960. Looks to be in great shape, but no shutter.

I have seen the 300mm version of this lens in an Ilex #5, but don't know the shutter size for this baby. Schneider's vintage optics page lists this:

IV/10+5FS

Is the IV referring to a #4???

It is not referenced on S. K. Grimes list. If anyone knows so I can start the hunt for a suitable shutter, I would appreciate the help.

Yes, the IV is #4. The original shutter for this lens was a Compound 4-X Tube 10/II, Type No. CN-1609-012. How that translates into the IV/10+5FS I don't know either...

The front and rear thread are 67.92mm x 40 tpi (64°), total length of shutter is 45mm.

I'm fortunate enough that my old Xenar lenses came with working shutter - a 180mm in a #2, and a 300mm in a #5. It's getting hard to find these now!

I also happen to have a Compur repair manual, with details on all Compur/Compound shutters up to 1974...

You got me thinking! I'm guessing the +5fs means it was also supplied in the infamous Compur #5 FS electronic shutter with the six C-cell (!) remote control. I have a remounted 240mm Heliar that was originally in a #5 Compur FS, and a Compound #4 would be roughly equivalent to the Copal #3 it now calls home.

You've got me stumped. My repair manual is only for mechanical shutters, fortunately no mention of the electronic ones.

My 300mm/f:4.5 Xenar is in a #5 Compound, Schneider mentions "V/12+5FS" as the shutter size.

The Compur #5 FS electronic shutter sounds singularly unsuited for field work!

Thanks for the answers, and I have been collecting some info, and have an additional question. An Ilex #4 has a max Iris opening of 1.73" inches, based on the data on S. K. Grimes page. That would be equal to 43.9mm. Even at the effective focal length given on Schneiders page of 235mm the opening at f/4.5 would have to be 52mm. Calculated on the back focal length of 214mm and you get closer at a max iris size of 47mm, but still to small. So based on this an Ilex #4 would be too small? Let me know if I am missing something.

I've requested a quote from S.K. Grimes, and am sure they will clear it up, and I will post when I get a reply from them. This is the first time I have had to mount a lens to shutter, so it is a little confusing.

Try to find a Compound #4. I measured one I had at 51mm maximum iris diameter. A synched shutter will be harder to find.

Ole,

There's a lens on FeeBay in the electronic Compur #5FS that has good pictures - it's a 600 Apo-Ronar. Comes with 12 foot and 33 foot cables! So you can use the cables to rapel down the waterfall after you lower the shutter down! Item #2979336527. Seriously, these are supposed to be excellent shutters, just large, very large.

I think I'll stick with Compound shutters and AutoKnips release - I hate the thought of being tethered to my camera when I fall off a cliff!

I have no doubt the shutters are exellent, just like I know the Compounds are

The lens arrived today, and it appears to have never been used. Virtually perfect. I cut a wooden board and poped it on my super. WOW!! Very bright, great out of focus background. Creamy. It would make a very nice portriat lens. Weighed out to be 716g.

I also got a quote from S.K. Grimes, and WOW!!! Sticker shock to mount the thing. YOu have to pay for quality work. I haven't dumped the idea of mounting it yet, but it won't be any time soon. It would be cheaper to buy a Speed graphic, and use the focal plane shutter.
