my friend has just lent me her 300mm nikor f9 in a copal 1. it seems it ha s abit of shutter problems. the "shutter release" does not return everytime. 1/4 is way off (like 1/250th!) and at times 1/125 the shutter does not close all the way.

i am bummed out about this. spring is almost on us and i want to shoot with this lens. i need a place for a CLA. flutots camera is closed on march 30th for 2 weeks so i do not think i can get it there and back in enough time. i am in NY nad i would like a reputable place that can do it resonably fast so i can shoot the flowers that should be arriving in 2 weeks or so.

what are your favorite repair places?

thanks

S. K Grimes in Rhode Island does great work. I've had a couple of shutter done by them and they work great! I don't know about that short of turn around though. Give them a call or send an email for details. They are an APUG supporter and have a link.

Good luck,
Paul

I was all set to say Flutot's...then I finished your message.

I got one shutter done by a guy recommended by Midwest Photo Exchange. It wasn't such a fast turnaround.

One question--what shutter speeds do you expect to use? Flowers don't run very fast. Maybe you could stop down and use slower film and get away with 1s shutter speeds and use the shutter on T or B?

There's Essex Camera Repair in Moonachie. NJ. It's about a two hour drive for you one way. I've found that the turn around time with Carol is faster than dropping the lens off at Essex. She has gotten shutters back to me in under two weeks. That's 6,000 miles both ways. Priority mail. You might still do it in time.

Carol had a turn-around time of about 2 weeks for me, and a lot of that was USPS time. Call or email her first and explain your problem, and ask if you can include payment with the lens, including shipping by 2nd Day Air. Then send it 2nd Day Air. From my experience, Carol is the only person I’ll trust for shutters.

You could try Paul Ebel. I've used him onced on the recommendation from Jim at Midwest Photo Exchange. I don't have his new address here at work. Very reasonable and very good. You could also try KEH's repair shop. Trouble is, almost anywhere you send it will take more than two weeks.

thanks everyone. i do not necessarily need it less than two weeks. i just figured i could not get it to flutots and fixed before they are on vacation.
i know that the flowers are not moving too fast, but i am concerned most about the lever not returniong and the shutter not closing all the way, that is the biggest problem.
the newest glitch is after i brought it to work to remove the lens board and the lenses, it started working perfectly! i have no idea why. i must have tripped the shutter a 100 times at all different speeds and it is working fine! go figure. i will assume it will malfunction again soon, but i may get a few shots in.

thanks for all the advice, i will send it out to one of them

I have a barrel lens mounted in a copal #1 that if I tighten the mounting ring from the back down to much, it malfunctions, if I take it off the board it works fine...somthing with the way the pressure is applied I guess..

You might want to send Carol an email explaining your situation. She can be very understanding and helpful. It won't cost you anything to ask her.
