The problem I have with my Hasselblads is that the lenses are quite bulky and don't leave much room for a cable release with a large end. Hasselblad has addressed this by making a cable release extension that is bent in the middle and, therefore, slightly angled. That gets the end of the cable release out and away from the crowding problem caused by the lenses. You might consider buying one.

As for the above, it appears to be a pneumatic release and those are primarily used on view cameras, studio cameras, and rail cameras, etc. They are connected to a fixture that is right on top of the shutter release and it takes very little effort to trip the shutter. Hasselblads have a somewhat complicated mechanical drive to get from the body into the lens. Hasselblads take slightly more effort to trip the shutter.

Therefore, I recommend that you stick with a standard cable release and the best one you can afford. Cheap cable releases are a curse.

i need a long cable for self portraits and can only find bulbed long releases
i like the idea of the cable showing in the picture so i also don't want to get a self-timer
i'm more wondering if it looks like it would screw into a 501c or does it look more like the ones you plug in

Yes, the screw will go in a hasselblad, the cable release screws are a standard almost all cameras use. The exceptions are some Nikons (F, F2, Nikon RF models) and screwmount Leicas. Those all use proprietary release screws.

As Geo pointed out, a Hasselblad's shutter release takes a strong pressure to trip; these air-releases probably won't do it. I had one just like your picture shows and it did not work for a hasselblad.

Hasselblad makes its own remote releases, with a price to match. These pro-level beasts are quite a snazzy sight with powerful plungers and can be found in second-hand dealers (if not visible, ask). THere are also Chinese copies of these releases which have been known to fly apart where components in the plunger area spring apart (poor manufacturing). The offset release extension mentioned in the foregoing posts is a worthy investment.

sounds like i'll have to get a timer shutter release (probably walz) and use the bulb/cord as a prop
gonna be trial and error since from what i can gather reading online, not everyone has had success tripping their hassels with timers

I have a shutter release like this (Hama), but longer (9,16m); tried it this morning with a 500CM and it works perfectly.
I had bought it in the 70's (I don't remember why); it's like new because not often used...

I also have a bulb, 20' shutter release I bought from Freestyle. Works fine with my 501c/m! However, this is w/ 80mm lens. I believe it might be too crowded to screw it in next to a bulkier lens.

By the way, if you find a timed release for it, please let me know your experience!

I've got an ancient Canon screw in self-timer that fits in standard cable release threads on the shutter button of the camera. It works great on my hasselblad, but you have to use the release lock found on the older models to keep the rear shutter flaps open or they will shut before the lens shutter does on longer exposures.
