Shutter Mount for Plaubel Anticomar 10cm/2.9

I fixed up a Plaubel Makina I and took it out for a day and LOVED the results. However it’s a bit of a tricky camera, no rangefinder, some light leaks. It’s got me thinking about hunting down a nice II. But it’s also got me wondering about mounting the anitcomar lens into a standard shutter and fitting it into my 2x3 press camera.

The outer diameter of the threads on the front cell are roughly 35.6mm, outer diameter of the threads on the rear cell are similar at 35.5mm.

I haven’t found a shutter that the lens fits into, not the synchro-compur #1, Copal 0, or Copal 1.

The Makina 1 is built around a dial set compur, so it seems like a reasonable bet that there could be a dial set compur out there that it would fit into, but they came in a lot of different sizes.

Curious if anyone has any thoughts on the best place to start.

Does your Plaubel Makina I not avail of the groundglass focussing screen?

Mine comes from the 1929 era - the lens is constituted by two doublets screwed in around the Compur dial set with very limited shutter options. It works great for such an old camera and the Anticomar 10cm f2.9 of this era is very distinctive compared to the later edition multicoated non separating front mounted single cell units of the Plaubel Makina IIR - IIIR series.

Of the Plaubel Makina II - there are early serial numbers which were indeed manufactured with the same lens design of the I - merely fitted into a more advanced black painted Makina II body. Somewhere down the later serial numbers the lens becomes a non-detaching fixed Plaubel Makina 10cm f.29 front cell unit, before it becomes an interchangeble lens series of the interchangeable IIR series with the 7.3cm f.6.3 Werth Orthar and the 15cm f4.5 Tele-makinar.

The shutter transplant won't be economical. The front standard of the Makina I is only held together by the double strut design - it's easier to transplant the whole front plate if your shutter was working.
So long as your cable release socket works, there are many other ways to keep working with the iconic I series without destroying its antique look.

To be clear! I quite enjoyed using it, even with the small issues.

Mine doesnt have the ground glass, I could track it down, but I just don’t have one. But then, mine was given to me for free from a friend, so I’m really not complaining.

I was just imagining transplanting the cells into an interchangeable shutter and tossing it on my 2x3 press camera which offers some movements, a range finder, more modern backs etc. Really just finding /more/ ways to use that lens because I found it’s look really quite astounding.

I found that GGs from several plate cameras will fit on I, II, and III Makina bodies (The 6x9 Makina is basically a child of plate and press camera parents).

Any specifics of interchangeably would be appreciated
Voigtlander avus 6x9(not 9x12) would work?
As ground glass backs for a makina i,ii or iii can be hard to come by.
I know the op is curious about the compur compound (1 I think)
The 9x12 voigtlander avus with a 135mm lens might be a source for compound 1 shutters but I'm not sure

Oh man! I actually didn’t expect a compound shutter to be so uncommon / expensive. Love the suggestion on the Avus.

Ah! So this page lists a bunch of the thread sizes for various shutters.


The dial set compur is listed as having front and rear threads of 35mm which is exactly what I measure the Anticomar’s threads at.

Does anyone know if this is true of /all/ dial set compur shutters (not compound?)? Or were there multiple variants or sizes?

Interesting! I just double checked mine and it’s definitely 35.64 on the outside. I guess they changed the mount?

That's just a particular dial set Compur that the person with the table measured (from a Plaubel Peco). There are a lot of dial set Compurs.

You measured the outer threads at approximately 35.6mm. This OD measurement is typically a bit under the nominal size. If the other dial set Compur truly had 35mmx0.5mm threads, your cells wouldn't screw in. There is some chance that what you have are actually 36mm x 0.75mm threads. That would make the rear cell the same as a Compur/Copal #1, but the front cell slightly undersized (the front of a standard #1 is 40x0.75mm). You should also measure the thread pitch, since obviously that needs to match up.

The length of the shutter (spacing between cells) also has to match.

Well one thing we are all learning is that I am NOT a machinist

But for the sake of testing I tried the front and rear cells in a Synchro-Compur #1 and a Copal #1 and they are slightly too small in all orientations.

I know that I used what I had when I was buying plate cameras- a motley assortment! But (from memory) this is a list of 6x9 GG backs that fit on the Makina I and II: Voigtlander Bergheil, Kodak Recomar, Zeca (can't remember the model). There was at least one other I'm blanking on. I mean, if you look at the Makina's single-sheet film holders, they are bog-standard plate camera construction (I used Plaubel holders when I tested the Bergheil, no issues that I can remember). The fact that the Bergheil glass worked bodes well for the Avus's.

Hey so small follow up, I recently got two dial set compur shutters and the anticomar lenses fit in both of them!

But the barrel length is questionable. I’ll need to do some more measuring to check that.

Okay, disassembled the Makina, the barrel length is 21.5mm and neither of the shutters matches womp womp
