Ctein did his printing. I don't know if any more of the dye transfer prints are still available for sale. I've seen em.

Great photo book and documentary.

If you've got Kanopy (which is free, you just need to sign up for a local library card), then you can see this, as well as many other photography and art-related documentaries.

Not from Ctein, at least not "new" ones. I'm sure he has a stash in his personal collection (which just to be clear, that he has gotten legitimately)

He ran low on DT supplies some time back and switched to inkjet, or rather, began making inkjets in parallel at some point. He held the last DT of Marshall's famous Jimi H. Woodstock shot, lent it to an auction house, it didn't sell, and they returned it to him mangled! I did my best to avoid that whole music scene, but did need to interact with Bill Graham Presents on a business basis. I worked for the company that sold them their outdoor stage supplies and equipment. The crew always sounded like they were just about to murder each other, and Marshall also had a reputation for an especially volatile temper. It came with the territory of drug abuse. They all got the job done they needed to do; but I don't know why anyone in their right mind would look back with nostalgia on that lifestyle or envy those folks. I saw an awful lot of it up close even though I tried to keep a distance.

Jim had already been one of my favorite photographers for a long time when I had the amazing good fortune to meet him. A mutual friend introduced me to the legend and we went to a local bar and drank for a few hours while Jim told all his usual and customary stories. He was very charismatic / empathetic and I could immediatly see why & how he had been such a great people photographer.

Yup. You sure didn't want to be on his shit list. He was bat-shit f'ing crazy and it got him into a lot of legal trouble. The mutal friend who introduced us was a retired SFPD Lieutenant who knew Jim well "from work".

Why impressed? You might bump right into one of the a few surviving superstars of the psychedelic music era in some coffee shop around here; and with a little more luck, they might even remember their own name. I've been involved in the remodel-restoration work of certain of their mansions and digs, but politely said no to party invitations. Too much money and fame tends to be downright poison to some people. Look at how many never made it past their 20's.

Not all public libraries offer Kanopy, unfortunately.

Oh yea, we saw "Show Me The Picture" at ROXIE when it was premiered there a couple years ago. His estate executor was there. Definitely a character. I have never talked to Ctein about Marshall per se, even though we are friends. I have a number of his books, and definitely one of those "once in a generation" photographers on what he did.

He still has a few for sale- also digital prints. I look occasionally and fantasize about buying a few.
