Very interesting. Thanks for the link. I wonder if the need to do several layers becomes somewhat less imperative if one is using a digital negative. Except the case where the goal is increasing the Dmax.

If you ever seen one of Irving Penn's prints, they're amazing. As you know, he never had the benefit of having computers and digital negs. With the advent of inkjet, there has been a resurgence of the process. I have a feeling that Penn enlarged his negs which requires mastery of the process.

I have enlarged negatives on both x-ray duplicating film and digital on Pictorico transparent film. I have Penn's book of his platinum prints. What is amazing is that he coated, exposed, processed and recoated, exposed, processed sometimes several times. Even with registration pins if using cotton paper perfectly flattening and the likelyhood of the paper changing shape and/or size is what is truly amazing.

Agree. Had a good fortune to see his retrospective at the National Gallery a few years ago.
