Shooting bulbs

Hello Apuger's,

Going to be using my bulb gun with my mini speed. Also will be using XP2 as my film.

I just picked up one of those hinged graflex flash shield diffusers that clip onto the reflector. The diffusion is pretty good and wondering what the light loss is. I figgure one stop but not sure. Anyone ever use a Graflex bulb gun with shield? I know I should test but don't have the time.

Possibly John at J and C could shed some light on this...his company handles the vintage flashbulbs.

Go outside with the shield and a light meter. Point the light meter at the sun and take a reading. Then put the difusser in the light path between the meter and the sun and take a reading. How much did the reading shange? THe change is your light loss.

wow, really? I'd be hesitant to point camera or meter directly at the sun unless it was dusk or dawn. Wouldn't pointing it at an even patch of north or south sky, sidewalk or even a piece of posterboard be better than pointing your meter directly at the sun?

I didn't even think of that. That should work fine. Dang, I like this forum!!

I was just thinking the same thing. The idea is just to measure the difference in light levels. Since I just want to see what kind of loss I get with this diffuser, either yours or Claire's idea should be ok.

If the light meter you use has a Cds cell it can be "blinded " by pointing it directly at the sun and take quite a while to recover, selenium photo electric cells (eg. Weston Master )and sbc (silicon blue cells ) used in some Gossen meters are not affected in this way

of course, if you have a flash meter, you could just fire off a bulb with the diffuser in place and read the light directly.
