This may be better off in the MF forum, but I suspect it will be noticed by those who would know regardless.

When using the Super-Angulon 47 wide open on 6x9 is the image significantly lower in quality to using it at f/11 or 16?

In other words how does this thing perform wide open?

Apo-Helvetar

The 48 mm f 5.6 Apo-Helvetar, made for ALPA, is apparently based on the 47 mm Super Angulon (NOT the XL version but the older version).

The Apo-Helvetar performs very well wide-open, and you can see examples on the ALPA website (all 6X9):

The vintage 47 will be noticebly less contrasty wide open, and the edges will soften up a good bit. Probably darken the edges a little. But it isn't unpleasant...no reason to not shoot it !

Besides, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do !

I find the 47 on my Graflex SW useable wide open if essential.
I have not done enough testing to determine if the vignetting is influenced by the hood

At f8 (wide open don't enlarge beyond 5x7 or so) and you will be happy. At f11 the lens is excellent at any enlargement, at f16 wonderful, at f22 diffraction begins to show, at f32 it is worse. F16 is the sweet spot for this lens with f 11 coming in a very close 2nd. Emile/www.deleon-ulf.com.

Thanks everyone. I'm considering it as a street (handheld) lens and wanted to get some feedback prior to pursuing it.
