I had heard of this new TV, as I'm sure many of you have as well. I finally saw one on display at Best Buy the other day, complete with a loupe so that you could check out the "new" yellow pixel.

It's an interesting concept, and one that belies the fundamental principles of the Young-Helmholtz theory of color vision. Specifically that we have 3 types of cones in our eyes, senstitive to red, green & blue, and that any color we see is reproducible by a combination thereof.

However, the truth is that it's very difficult to get a phosphor to create a color that perfectly matches our color-sensation curves, and this goes for color film as well.

At any rate, it's an interesting concept and makes me wonder about quantifying the gamut by considering the colors you're working with and determining what colors would be needed to produce a greater range and/or purity of certain colors. It also raises thoughts about using this to our analog or digital means, either by producing 4th layers (Fuji anyone?) in the film, or perhaps another reseau element in a screen-plate, to a 4th layer in multi-layer color print (carbon, dye-imbibition), to this technology being universally adopted in monitor, LCD and television displays.

Lastly, what part of the signal is this new yellow component composed from? That is, you surely won't take a "yellow separation", since this would include all colors except blue and thus would just serve to desaturate. So that doesn't speak well for it's utility in a screen-plate, however, (there was a url link here which no longer exists)has successfully used (there was a url link here which no longer exists) to produce an excellent modern screen-plate photograph.

Discuss amongst yourselves...
