Shadowing an experienced printer

This is an idea I've been thinking about for a while. I've been printing on my own for almost a year now and I've read some books and experimented and I feel I'm hitting a plateau in that area. I strongly believe in learning from others, not necessarily copying their methods but at least being exposed to other ways of doing/thinking, questioning and adapting those methods to my own.


Are there any experienced printers who wouldn't mind being shadowed as they work and bombarded with questions ? Preferably in town but maybe also NYC as I travel there quite often (or used to at least)

I would imagine any professional printers would accommodate you for a day rate and materials fee. I have done this on many occasions over the last 20 years.

I doubt anyone would do this with other client work without a fee associated, and it may not be really helpful .

Or as Micheal refers to find a workshop.

Steve Sherman in Connecticut offers one on one workshops and he is directly between you and Montreal.

A few years ago I had a class with Per Volquartz in his home. There was to be a second person in the class who did not show up, so I had Per to myself. I bought a roll of film from Yosemite NP that I had taken. I would not get the photographs to stand out. Something was missing. It was worth the expense and it yielded three 13+" square prints. I took detailed notes and learned about pyro processing as will as printing and bleaching. I was not able to arrange to come back when he did the Selenium toning. If he were still alive I would take the class again.

I'm an east-coast (US) guy and thought the two Sexton workshops I attended in California were quite worth the effort. Many techniques and tools I never would have imagined.

I've been away from NYC for a spell, but there was a great printer there named Jim Magargee (SP)...used to print some of Annie's work...a really
good man, and talented printer. Maybe you could visit with him...
