Is that possible? The series VI filters I have (amassed!!) for my mini Crown Graphic have no thread - the just "sit" in a holder, which is sometimes a push on ring on a push on lens hood, or a step-up/down ring from a metric size (49mm to series VI, for example).

Series filters were supposed to be held in place by a threaded retaining ring, screwed into the Series filter holder - usually a fixed part of the lens) that also had a Series size designation.
So it would be possible, yes.
But the thread pitch of Series filter retaining rings isn't the same as in metric filters. So even though, say, Series VIII is 67 mm wide, metric 67 mm filters will not fit properly.
Actually the ring that holds the 'series' filter in place has a measured size. For example series V is like 32mm and series VI is like 44mm. This is important with Bolex equipment because the front lens threads have the 'series' thread sizes. The way it works is that the threaded lenshoods hold the series filters in place in the front of the lens. Filter and adapter manufacturers tend to skip those series size threads, so I had to have SK Grimes make screw on adapters for my Bolex lenses so I can use more common filter/accessory sizes like 49mm and 35mm. I had them make 44mm->49mm and 32mm->35mm adapters.
I have a Series VIII holder that's held on with 3 set screws. My 67mm filters screw onto the holder just fine. I use this holder on all my LF lenses without any problems.
