I have a Series 6 lens shade and would like to obtain the correct-fitting filters. I'd like to try before I buy. Anyone with recommendations for a source in the San Francisco bay area? Is Gassers good for this?

Hello;
You did not mention the lens you were using or the camera. Many of the old lenses used a slip-on filter adapter, no machined threads for filters. Look for a camera store that has used filters, or E_ay. Steven.

Series filters and adapters are a thing of the past, I'm afraid. I don't think you'll find any retail outlet that has filters in Series VI size. I have lots of adapters (given to me and bought at photo shows) but very few decent filters since these often didn't survive the poor storage conditions that some of the "collections" I got went through (think moldy old box in Grand-dad's garage.)

This is a pretty good introduction to the series adapters and filters. If you need an adapter or another hood, PM me. I just might have it.

Not all lenses can take threaded filters. Many large format lenses can only use series filters. The OP has a Speed Graphic and many of those lenses cannot take threaded filters, especially the barrel lenses.

Not in San Francisco => http://www.songofsnow.com/

Thanks for your replies. The links you folks provided were very helpful!

Well, it's like this; I'm trying to do something that neither Carl Zeiss or Tiffen intended (no big surprise here, right?) Here's the setup: Anniversary (I think) Speed Graphic and furnished with convertable Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 4,5/150 T lens in a Synchro Compur shutter. The lens has a Tiffen #602 adaptor ring, Series 6 which seems to measure out to 43.5mm. The lens set up also has a Kodak Lens Hood Series 6, which when removed, the Tiffen retainer ring can mount to the Tiffen adaptor for drop-in Series VI filters.

Here's the Big Idea; which isn't working out too well yet. Apply a Cokin Series A adaptor ring to either the Tiffen adaptor ring, or the Kodak lens hood so I can use my collection of Cokin filters for B&W work. I have Cokin 52mm, 54mm and 55mm rings none of which fit the Kodak hood. I do not have smaller Cokin rings that might fit the Tiffen adaptor ring, and it seems like this isn't going to work with the whole Cokin theme.

So, barring that idea, I should probably find some Series VI filters and go from there.

filterfind.net carries series 6 filters and adapters, they are in the Berkley area. I don't know if he does pickup or not, I usually see him at a camera show in Pasadena. I'm sure he does bay area shows.

Thanks, lacavol. I layover in Berkeley on my route several times a week, and I sent him an email. Hope!

AZ... have you shopped ebay yet? I've bought plenty of Series V and VI filters there -- often for very reasonable prices. Some folks list them at prices like they are rare and not available in stores any more :wink: but others price them to sell. Buy a Series VI drop-in yellow and red filter either off ebay or from filterfind... they will fit the setup you desribed. That is the original equipment. I use the similar gear and the same filters. BTW, the filter should fit in the holder and be properly retained by the hood, no need for the retaining ring unless you go hoodless.

I contacted filterfind.net and to simplify the process, he is sending me a retaining ring or holder that is threaded on both sides, and that will resolve the issue in its simplest terms. Originally, I was hoping to be able to use the Cokin adaptor which would give me a wide array of filters that could be quickly replaced if damaged, etc., but for now I'll set it up as originally crafted by Tiffen.

Ebay? It's where I do most of my shopping for toys and parts, actually. I live in a somewhat rural area, and all the good shops are gone except places like N.Y., L.A. or the Bay Area, the latter where I often work. I'm glad companies like Freestyle are still making the good stuff available, too!

For those with a similar problem, I am happy to report the issue has been resolved, in part by the help of this online community. I was put in touch with a fellow in my area, and was supplied the following parts: a Tiffen 53.5mm F 7 Series 7 adaptor which threaded on to the original Kodak Series 6 hood, and a Series 7 drop in filter retaining ring, then the Cokin 54mm 'A' adaptor. This setup allows for both the use of a wide array of inexpensive Cokin filters, while also allowing for the traditional drop-in filters.

He also provided me with a Cokin 44mm 'A' adaptor which screws directly to the Tiffen #602 Series 6 adaptor, if I decide to eliminate all those rings.

Thanks all who replied!
