Hi all,

Somehow I didn't scroll down far enough to stumble across this section - I always get stuck at the Equipment boards. My name is Antje (that's a female northern German/Dutch name, just to avoid confusion  ), and I'm originally from a part of Germany called Westfalen where the woods are deep and the cows are plenty... After studying biology and some years at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, I ended up in a little village between Erlangen and Nürnberg. Where, again, the woods are deep and the cows plenty!

My road to APUG was not exactly straight, even though my dad has been a photographer for 50 years and owns All The Cameras In The World. He actually uses a dozen or two of them regularly, and some of my earliest memories are of him in the darkroom or behind the camera. I basically grew up with the smell of fixer. He tried several times to interest me in photography, but I guess for a 12-year-old or so it's not a lot of fun to have your dad develop your pictures and tell you what you didn't do right... So I didn't touch a camera in decades.
Until my husband brought home a tiny, plastic 2 MP digital camera. He had to work hard to convince me to try it, but when I did, I was immediately hooked. Six months later I had a Canon 10D, and now I own and work with a 20D, a 300/4, three macro lenses, a fast 50 prime and a wide angle. See a pattern here? Right, I mostly take photos of animals and flowers and do macros and I enjoy that tremendously.

But I never really warmed to taking landscape shots or street shots or something like that. And I caught myself cropping more and more of my shots square... and converting them to B&W... Then, one day, my dad showed me a TLR he has, and when I saw the viewfinder, I almost dropped it. It was big, it was bright, it was - what I had missed. And the 6x6 format immediately worked for me. So I went and bought a Rolleicord I, then some darkroom equipment and a scanner, and now I'm shopping for a Hasselblad. Developing my own film is such a nice break from postprocessing in front of the computer, and reminds me pleasantly of my years in a science lab. It somehow felt right straight away. And seeing the film dangling in the shower is immensely pleasing.

And this is how I found this wonderful place! Thanks in advance for all the money you guys will cost me! :D

Thinking of which, my dad called the other day and told me he had finally fixed the leaking bellows on his 13x18 (cm) camera - would I like to borrow it? I guess I should have said no...

Anyway, glad to be here!

Antje

It seems you've come to the right place...

There's even a sizeable (and growing) 13x18 / 5x7" community here! However much photo equipment you just know you have to have, there's always someone here who is worse. I myself am now down to only two 13x18 cameras - down from three, and I've owned two more...

Greetings, Antje, from "upstate" New York State, where the woods are fenced, and the cows....wait a sec....um......they're aren't any cows nearby. (although there is an alpaca farm just a couple of miles away.)

Remember, in high wind and driving rain, a digicam (along with a big rock) will keep all your papers from blowing away.

Welcome to this forum where sincerity and silliness meet and continue the rich traditon of analoque photography.

Hi Antje,

Welcome from New York City this morning and from Copake (also upstate New York) this evening where the cows have been sold and the pastures are turning into "country weekender" McMansions!

From the sounds of it, I think you'll enjoy it here.

BTW: My German geography is poor which is kind of sad since I work for Bayerische Landesbank. When I get home, I'll look up Erlanger in the Atlas.

Antje,

Welcome from Seattle where we have replaced the woods with condos and the cows with SUV's. Even so, it's a very beautiful setting.

Bob

Welcome, and what a great story. I have looked at your photos, looks like you have a real nice touch.

Do you have any of your BW tlr images posted?

Ok, found them!

Welcome to the club from rural Ontario, where the woods are deep and the cows plenty as well.

PS: Sounds like every corner in Germany looks pretty much the same - I'm originally from a small village in Saxony where (you guessed it) the woods are deep and the cows plenty :D

Beware of cows - (to quote from David Noton) they'll poo in your Lowepro and lick your Nikkors!

Welcome to APUG, Antje. May your 'finder be bright, your bokeh be pleasing and your prints be deep of DMAX!

Thanks in advance for all the money you guys will cost me! :D

Antje

You're more than welcome! (see my sig line)

And welcome from Texas, where we also have woods, a few cows, and towns with names like Dresden, Muenster, Westphalia, New Berlin, New Braunfels, Weimer, and a bunch more!

Hey Dave,

Do you live near New Braunfels? I order smoked meats from the New Braunfels Smokehouse from time to time.

Welcome from Denmark, Antje
Looks like youre on the way to full recovery instead of being just a semiconvert :D
Cheers

Welcome from NRW, Antje ;-))

Semi convert? You are well on your way in becoming a regular analog-holic and I don't think the relationship to your father is doing any help. I suggest you drop everything and head back to digital while there's time, because when you get hooked in film, there is no saving you!*
*sigh* another poor soul sept into the abyss of the dark room.
Welcome to the Dark Side Antje.

Dear Antje,

With any luck we'll SAVE you some money too -- this forum is famous for tips that run from the ingeniously economical 'Why didn't I think of that' to the stupidly penny-pinching 'Why ruin the picture'. You might also care to have a look at the free 'Saving Money' module in the Photo School at www.rogerandfrances.com.

:D Isn't that reassuring! Good to hear I'm not alone.

I called my mom today to tell her about my new Hasselblad, and she wasn't really enthusiastic about it. She asked me if I really needed that one, and I really could not explain to her why I had to do this. Needless to say, my dad not only understood, but was jealous.

Welcome to the Dark Side Antje.

It's MUCH too late for turning back... I have been told once one beholds the first 6x6 negative, one is beyond help. My father - well, yes, like many addictions, this too runs in the family. I imagine Christmas will as usual end with the two of us showing us each others' cameras and listening to the siren call of their shutters. If we lose all control, we'll try out the 13x18 and his new enlarger.

I'm scared.

Roger, what a great link, thanks!

You're doomed.

I might as well welcome you to the 13x18 club right now! :D

Hmmm...13x18!

Have you considered contact printing? 13x18 contact prints are wonderful.

Greetings from the Santa Monica Mountains of Southern California - very few cows remain, but we have woods, deer, raptors, rattlesnakes, bears and mountain lions.

Hey Antje,

I'm pretty new here too, and I've also got a biology background (I'm doing a PhD in biochemistry right now).

I also know exactly what you mean by the joy that comes from the darkroom - maybe it's just the novelty, but I developed my first film (4x5" large format) last night and I really liked the process. Also, like you, my dad had a darkroom and I remember using it as a kid. Unfortunately now he neglects it, and equally unfortunately he refuses to let me use it.

Anyway, hi, from a fellow semi-convert. I suspect I'll still be using my digital SLR and lenses, but for now I'm only shooting large format as it's something totally new to me and I really like the process.
