Seeking "Mural" Sized Printer - B&W

I've been commissioned to do a series of big prints for a large installation. 2 of these prints need to be 8' square. Not having printed this large I would not even attempt it myself and and I need some solutions. I immediately thought about and have already called Bob Carnie on this, but he is away until Monday. I will speak with him then about this, but am on a tight deadline and need some other possibilities. I figured this would be a good place to ask. I'm hoping for traditional process and it needs to be the highest of quality. Who are the "go-to" folks for this?

Hi-
I frequently print on 106.7 cm. fibre roll paper and I believe Ilford cuts rolls one size up from that although I'm positive it's not available in 8' wide rolls. So you're going to be stuck working w/ 2 separate sheets of paper which would then have to be joined in the mounting process.

Do you have any experience working w/ fibre based roll paper and images larger than 30"x40"? There are some tricks to material handling (i.e. even processing and proper drying technique) and even knowing these the learning curve can be rather steep. And then there's the tedium of having to hand wash each print for an hour in heavy troughs.

I went to graduate school w/ a photographer who taught me this technique. He learned it from a guy who made multipanel murals for one of those overblown commercial/fine-art cross-over artists who exhibited portraits in 8' - 10' scale for a museum show in Boston, Ma.

In the past I've made very good money printing on this scale ($500/40x50 for archival mural) since not too many folks are doing it. If you're looking to job it out to a reputable lab I'd try either modernage in nyc (reasonably priced) or Ken something-or-other in nyc (sorry, can't remember his last name however I know he's ridiculously expensive and would probably charge 3-5 k for a print this size). Modernage's processing is a little dubious re:archival wash since they use a modified rt machine to process fibre murals. If I can be of more help pm me....
 
Patty Katchur specializes in B&W mural printing and teaches workshops on mural printing at the CFAAHP in New York. She used to be at Sixty-Eight Degrees but I think she's decided to focus more on the CFAAHP these days. She still is listed on the website at www.sixtyeightdegrees.com, but it might be easier to find her at patty@cfaahp.org.
 
Bill... I recently had some large prints made at Palm Press in Concord, MA. One of their printers is on APUG from time to time. Mine weren't mural sized, but they specialize in that, and do a great job. My prints are awesome!

I work there and produce large silver gelatin murals for many clients. We are located in MA and are able to do a ton of work through FedEx for people who are in various parts of the world. We also are able to dry mount the murals as we have quite a giant press. We mount to aluminium mostly, but can also mount to rag board. The widest roll of paper however isn't really close to 8'. We make excellent prints are competitive with our prices.

Jordke, I am looking up the site as we speak and will be calling. I realize there is no paper that wide, but I am hoping through creative mounting, I can get this done.

Talk to Steve Rifkin at Hank's Photo Dead Link Removed. He's in New York, about an hour north of NYC. Steve specialises in prints up to 8'x10' and his client list is impressive. I know him from when he was in Minneapolis and can vouch for the standard of work.

The biggest photo roll size available to my knowledge is 72". At that size the only place I could find to do the job were these folks. http://www.duggal.com/ Sadly, I never did do the enlargement.

MGM Grand Photos

I thought I'd post a link to a photograph of the final print installed in its new home. Final size of these was 7' x 8' and 7' x 7' foot. Here's another link that shows a couple of the "small" ones done 40" x 40". Thanks agauin to all for your suggestions.

Bill that is truly impressive. imagine those prints have quite a "presence"
