Hi,

I've been considering getting a 4x5 reducing back for my Century 8x10. I've got a stash of 4x5 Tech Pan and other 4x5 films I wanted to try out and I don't currently own a 4x5 so I thought finding the back might be less trouble and expense than buying another camera.

I've noticed that some of the deardorff reducing backs use pins like the back on my Century. were these pins standardized for functionality across different camera brands?

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Unfortunately, the back sizes and pin spacing are all over the place, depending on the camera brand (ask me how I know). The only positive info I know is, backs that fit a Burke and James 8x10 will fit on a Kodak Master 8x10. But, I have a Century 8x10 sitting on my shelf (bad bellows, or maybe no bellows at this point) and (I think) some 4x5 reducing backs of unknown provenance-- I'll see if I have one that fits. I guess you're used to lugging an 8x10 around, but part of the point of 4x5 is how much more compact it is. You might want to pick up a cheap 4x5 anyway even if you get the reducer back.

If you can find an old 4x5 wooden film holder that has two one piece metal septa back to back you can disassemble the holder and double side tape the septum into 8x10 film holder. Mark your ground glass where the smaller holder is and when focusing increase the focus by the amount the film is now sitting above the 8x10 surface. It works for 4x5 and for 5x7.

Sorry for the delay, but, as might be expected, I checked my stock and do not have one-- my Century only has the 8x10 back.
