My photo instructor mentioned we would eventually be using two or more developer baths. I guess I could have asked him why, but I thought I would ask you folks. What is the purpose of this?

You need to ask him what he meant.

He could mean your using different types of developer for different purposes. Or he might mean using a divided developer for film development.

Two bath developing is also sometimes used for print processing a soft developer to bring out the hightlight details and a higher contrast developer to bring out the shadow detail, Dr Beers variable contrast developer is a two part developer and each bath can be used individually or mixed.

Yes this is for prints. Sorry I didn't specify that. The emphasis of the class is on printing so that makes sense. Now I can hardly wait. Thanks.

Or it could be a develop-bleach-redevelop process, in which case, you are in for a bundle of fun

Google for "second pass lith", then mix in copper bleach for some ideas.

He will be introducing your class to other methods of toning and tinting photographs.
