I am in search of good spot meter. Anyone with suggestions? Want to make sure I can current style battries for it. Don't want to fool around trying fixes for the old mercury batt.

There are several around, but one of the favorites is the Pentax digital, unlike the earlier (analog) one it takes current batteries.

Sekonic L758D / DR is a long time favourite among accomplished landscape / scenic photographers. You will nevery ever need any other meter. Uses one 3v CR123A lithium and is deadly accurate.

I have the sekonic mentioned above, I find it to be very reliable and has lots of useful options such as incident metering too. Runs for a long time on one battery.

I like my Pentax Digital Spot Meter. No bells, no whistles, reliable. Relatively compact. For landscape work, I do not need averaging, readings kept in memory, etc. When I read the low and high values, even at 63 I can still remember them long enough to figure out what to do with them.

Mine is a Zone VI modified meter, but I took off the zone sticker on the dial. Just complicates things.

One more for the Pentax Digital Spotmeter. I have two of them. One in my 4x5 bag and one in my 2 1/4. Both Zone VI modified.

The Pentax (analogue) Spotmeter V takes three 1.5V cells that are readily available. It is a fine instrument, a pleasure to use.

I've used both anolgue and digital Pentax spot meters. I actually ended up liking the anolgue more. The spotmeter V takes modern batteries (assuming you didn't get the older model of anolgue meter). It gives you a simplistic needle that is very easy to read. Having the zone dial is helpful, mine came with one but it wouldn't be too hard to make your own.

This is the one. An additional benefit is that this unit is a flash meter and has an optional wireless module to use with PocketWizard radio triggers.

Do you really think the Gossen at $2200 for a meter is a reasonable suggestion?

They use to be $3500 a few years ago.
When and if you can find one on the used market they go for less than $1000 and are well worth it.
