Does anyone know what the little lever on the Copal 1 shutter marked OFF-M is for?
(Just into Large Format so a bit ignorant of the gear)
Thanks.

Shutter do vary. Newer shutters are usually only synched for electronic flash and don't have a switch. Older lenses are sometimes synched for flash or bulb, and have a switch USUALLY marked X (for flash) and or M or B (for bulb). Yours is probably an older shutter marked M (for bulb) and OFF (for flash). I've never seen that designation, but someone else will jump in and confirm what I've written -- or tell me to jump in a lake.

Thanks for that 👍
Until I find what it is for - think it best left well alone.

Whatever it is, it's not going to affect the shutter speeds. And since it's an older shutter -- have any idea? -- have you tested the shutter speeds? Do they sound OK, anyway? Can you send a photo?

Honestly..its an age thing (91)..
.I should have said the lever is marked X-M NOT off-M.
Which makes more sense now...my fault..should wear my glasses...🙄
Many thanks to all who came up with helpful posts.
I shall hide in the corner for a few days...

X is for electronic flash, and M is for bulb flash. The lever is covering part of the X, which makes it appear to be a v in the photo.

Yes.. the penny dropped and the bell went off when I took a closer look (at my age and having had 2 cataracts removed) the eyes are still not back to normal!

For what it is worth, I recently had 2 cataracts removed. The replacement lenses weren't exactly right and were intended to give good vision only at distance. I'm back to wearing trifocals, now have good vision at all distances.

I have no idea which replacement lenses the NHS gave you, but it is possible that you're in my situation post-surgery and will need eyeglasses. I had another slight complication post-surgery, dry eyes. This made determining my new prescription difficult. Lubricating artificial tears, sold over the counter in the US, solved that.

Great to see bright colours again eh?
Think I might ante up for an Intrepid Black next week.
🤔Might as well go for broke seeing as the lens cost half the price of the camera!

I never lost them. But after the first eye was done, it saw colors shifted to blue while the eye waiting for surgery saw colors shifted to yellow.
