How good is this scanner compared to, say, a Scanmate 5000 which some people on the forum use? A possible offer for a complete scanner/software/dongle package popped up locally, but I'm wondering if it's worth the inevitable learning curve and investment in expendables. Has anyone acutally used it? It would mainly be used for 4x5 and 8x10 transparencies.

I have the 5000 and it's very good. The main reason the 3000 isn't appealing is the drum isn't removable. So mounting must be done with the drum in the scanner. And the resolution is lower, but for 4x5 and 8x10 (check if it can scan that size) that shouldn't be an issue. I imagine the noise level is roughly the same, but I have no info one way or the other.

The scanner can do 8x10, but it isn't very clearly stated anywhere how to mount on a non-removable drum. Does it mean it's not possible (or recommended) to wet mount?

Update-

I have now received information that it may be possible to successfully wet-mount on a non-removable drum. It seems if you use only a little amount of fluid (but how little is too little?) and a proper tape that will stick to the drum well, won't leave residue, won't react with the fluid (and won't fly off during scanning), it will work. Anyone care to comment, preferably from first-hand experience?
